Ìtàn World: African Art On-Chain
Empowering African artists through on-chain art sales, preserving cultural stories on the Base ecosystem
Why are you participating for Based Africa?
Our motivation stems from a deep connection to the African continent and a commitment to empowering African artists. Ìtàn World has been built to create real-world impact by onboarding African artists to the blockchain and giving them access to a global marketplace. In the last year, we’ve successfully onboarded nearly 200 African artists and facilitated the sale of over 16 ETH of artwork on-chain. We see immense potential in using Base to solve critical challenges in the African art community, from limited access to global markets to the need for artists to preserve and protect their cultural stories. Base offers the perfect infrastructure to bring these artists on-chain, ensuring that their work is accessible, secure, and valued globally. This project is deeply personal to us, and our mission aligns with the ethos of Base Africa—leveraging blockchain to create economic opportunities for the continent’s creatives. By participating in this Buildathon, we aim to further expand Ìtàn World’s reach, using Base to onboard even more African artists, teach them how to navigate the Web3 space, and ensure they receive fair compensation for their talent.
What challenges are you focusing on?
The African art community faces several significant challenges, including:
- Limited Global Access: Many African artists lack the resources and visibility to reach global audiences and markets. As a result, their work is often undervalued or never seen outside their immediate environment.
- Ownership and Copyright Issues: Artists struggle with protecting their intellectual property. Once artwork is sold locally, tracking and ownership of their pieces are often lost, leading to exploitation in some cases.
- Financial Barriers to Entry: For artists, navigating the world of NFTs and cryptocurrency can be daunting. Many artists don't have access to the tools and education needed to engage with blockchain technology.
- Cultural Preservation: African artists often depict rich cultural stories in their work, but there is no reliable infrastructure to ensure these stories are preserved and documented digitally.
How does your submission address this challenge?
Ìtàn World directly tackles these challenges by leveraging Base’s on-chain tools:
- Access to Global Markets: By bringing African art on-chain, Ìtàn World provides artists with exposure to a global collector base. Blockchain technology enables artists to showcase their work to an international audience, bridging the gap between African creators and collectors worldwide.
- Ownership and Royalties: The platform ensures that artists maintain ownership of their work and continue to earn royalties from secondary sales, thanks to Base’s transparent and decentralized structure. This allows for fair compensation and long-term protection of their intellectual property.
- Education and Onboarding: We provide artists with the education and resources necessary to successfully mint, sell, and promote their artwork on Base. We make it easy for artists to onboard without technical difficulties, allowing them to focus on their craft rather than the complexities of blockchain.
- Cultural Preservation: The blockchain serves as an immutable ledger, ensuring that African art and the stories it tells are preserved forever. This ensures that even as the art moves through the hands of collectors, the cultural narratives remain intact and accessible to future generations. Through our platform, African artists are empowered to enter the world of Web3, earn fair compensation, and preserve their cultural heritage, all while engaging in the digital economy.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest hurdles we faced was onboarding artists who were unfamiliar with blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. Many artists lacked access to basic information about how to create a crypto wallet, mint an NFT, or engage with on-chain platforms like Base. To overcome this, we developed easy-to-follow onboarding protocols focused on education. Another technical hurdle involved simplifying the wallet setup process. Smart Wallets and Basenames help us reduce the complexity for new users, making it easier for them to interact with the Ìtàn World platform. Additionally, we faced challenges related to transaction fees and ensuring that artists could onboard without facing prohibitive costs. By leveraging Base’s lower transaction fees and educating artists about gas-efficient minting, we were able to lower these barriers.
Additional Features
During the Buildathon, we proritized Basenames and Smart Wallet integrations, to make onboarding even easier for new artists. These tools simplify the process of getting on-chain, making it more accessible for artists who may not be familiar with blockchain technology. We also introduced additional educational resources to help artists understand the process of selling their work on Base and navigating the Web3 space. Before the Buildathon, Ìtàn World had already onboarded nearly 200 African artists and facilitated over 16 ETH in on-chain sales. However, our focus during the Buildathon was to improve usability, simplify the onboarding process, and add features that will make the platform more scalable and accessible to a larger number of artists.
