The problem Imperfect Abs solves
Imperfect Abs is an MVP that solves the biggest problems in digital fitness: lack of motivation, poor accountability, and short-term engagement. By combining real-time AI pose detection with blockchain-backed scoring and dynamic weather-based bonuses, it makes working out feel meaningful—even when you're training solo. Every rep is tracked, verified, and rewarded on Avalanche, with Chainlink powering automated weather bonuses and secure, random daily challenges. This eliminates the guesswork, gamifies consistency, and ensures everyone plays by the same rules—no cheating, no shortcuts, just real effort, transparently scored.
What makes it truly innovative is the weather-aware reward system—a unique, real-world mechanic that transforms tough conditions into bonus opportunities. Rainy run? Hot afternoon plank? You earn more. Over time, this could evolve into compound incentives, streak bonuses, or even ecosystem-wide rewards like discounts, cross-app perks, or loyalty tokens. While this MVP focuses on ab workouts (relatively weather independent), the core system is designed to scale & prove the architecture—unlocking use cases in running, cycling, yoga, or even outdoor group fitness. Imperfect Abs is the first proof-of-concept for a broader, chain-powered fitness economy—where weather, effort, and consistency finally pay off.
Challenges I ran into
One of the main challenges we encountered was integrating Chainlink Functions for real-time AI workout scoring—specifically, managing multi-argument requests within the constraints of the system. While basic Function calls with one or two string arguments worked flawlessly, our main function (which required four arguments: reps, form accuracy, duration, and workout type) consistently failed with a low-level 0x1d70f87a error during gas estimation. After extensive debugging, we ruled out issues with the subscription, DON ID, contract logic, or even the toString conversions. The problem appears linked to the number or structure of arguments being passed—suggesting undocumented limits or encoding quirks when building requests in Solidity for Chainlink Functions.
Another critical issue was a Node.js compatibility bug that blocked secret uploads to the Chainlink DON. The latest versions of Node.js (v20+) caused cryptographic module failures (gOPD is not a function), which broke the encrypted secrets flow needed to securely send OpenAI API keys. We resolved this by downgrading to Node.js v18.18.0, rebuilding native dependencies, and confirming full encrypted secrets upload via CLI. These issues were time-consuming but ultimately led to a robust and production-ready setup: AI-backed workout analysis, weather-aware logic, and secure function execution—all live on Avalanche Fuji, powered by Chainlink. This rigorous debugging process has given us deep insight into Chainlink’s limits and how to build scalable, composable fitness primitives for the future.
