The problem IlluminateAI solves
Amid escalating public health issues such as diabetes, obesity, and mental health crises, harnessing effective public health insights has become crucial. Despite the abundance of health data, transforming vast datasets into actionable insights is a complex process that demands technical expertise and time. Enter IlluminateAI, akin to a ChatGPT for Microsoft Excel, this web application can process large medical datasets to extract pertinent statistics for users. It offers medical professionals a straightforward method to obtain data-driven insights, thereby enhancing patient care.
Our initiative to develop IlluminateAI was inspired by our interview with Dr. Parks, a practicing pulmonary oncologist in Atlanta. His feedback was helpful in developing our project, highlighting the pressing need for doctors to be able to efficiently analyze patient data, public health datasets, and more. This realization underscored the importance of enabling medical practitioners to uncover deeper insights into health correlations, treatments, and various biological factors. Thus, IlluminateAI was born to empower health professionals to swiftly derive insights, paving the way for a healthier future.
Challenges we ran into
Developing IlluminateAI presented numerous hurdles to ensure seamless user interaction with their processed data. The cornerstone of this development was translating user text into SQL queries for efficient data handling. This was achieved by leveraging OpenAI's natural language processing technology and enhancing our model to convert English text into precise SQL commands, streamlining data queries.
Another significant obstacle was managing the vast diversity of datasets. As IlluminateAI is designed for a broad spectrum of users and data types, it was crucial to ensure its effectiveness across all scenarios. This involved eliminating data inconsistencies, such as null values, to facilitate SQL query generation, data analysis, and the generation of accessible visuals.
The final major challenge involved data visualization. Given the variety of data types users might input, IlluminateAI needed to interpret this data and select the appropriate visualization technique. Through a specialized algorithm, IlluminateAI discerns between different data types, automating the visualization process and producing outputs like pie charts, bar charts, tables, and straightforward statistical findings.
These challenges were among the most significant in the development of IlluminateAI, yet they represent just a fraction of the efforts behind the scenes to deliver an exceptional product, all of which was incredibly fun and a great learning process. With Node.js and parts of the other technologies being brand new to our developers, it was enriching to learn and develop a full stack project like IlluminateAI.
