ID8R was already a powerful community and social engagement tool for web3 enthusiasts. It enables you to create personalized digital showcases for your NFTs, tailored to share on social media and devices.

The UNPLUGGED with Nouns track inspired us to think about new ways we might leverage ID8R to benefit NFT owners.

ID8R now catapults your NFTs from URL to IRL. Here's what we built over the past 30 days and what it helps to solve:

• Limited physical representation of digital assets: Transform your screen-bound NFTs into tangible merch. Postcards, badges, business cards – your digital assets now have real-world presence. By creating new design formats to enable the creation of personalized merch, ID8R helps NFT enthusiasts showcase their digital assets in real-world settings, enhancing visibility and sparking conversations about web3.
• Lack of customization options: The new stickers feature allows you to add exclusive Noggles (the iconic Nouns glasses) to your favorite NFTs, offering a unique way to personalize and blend different NFT properties. Slap some Noggles on your punk – go wild ⌐◨-◨
• Limited use of NFT intellectual property: ID8R provides a platform for users to build upon and expand the IP of their favorite NFT collections, encouraging creative expression and potentially increasing the value of their digital assets.
• Lack of community engagement tools: The physical merchandise created through ID8R (and then printed) can be used at meetups and events, fostering stronger connections within the web3 community and providing a tangible way to identify fellow enthusiasts.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered a number of hurdles during the buildathon.

• Dynamic placement of graphics with Konva.js: Our app was developed to handle graphics with fixed locations, using Canvas API. To allow someone to place Noggles dynamically on the canvas (on top of an NFT) we needed to integrate an additional library (Konva.js). When someone composes a graphic on ID8R we recreate it on a second canvas in the backend to create the full-size image when it is downloaded. Tracking the x and y coordinates of the stickers as they were flipped and rotated became increasingly difficult due to the negative numbers it resulted in. We came up with a novel solution and instead of actually flipping the Noggles graphic in Konva.js, we swap it for a pre-flipped alternate image. This kept all x and y coordinates positive and easily placed on the second canvas.
• Canvas sizes for new design formats: We introduced new design formats, including postcard (1847x1247px) and business card (1110x685px). Due to some tech debt in the way our app was developed initially, it is quite complex to make changes to the way the canvas is displayed and it was only through trial and error that we found a formula that displayed the new formats at an appropriate size. We are still tweaking this and will likely need to rewrite the code in time. We are incrementally refactoring the code, rewriting it in TypeScript from vanilla JavaScript, which will make it easier to change, manage, and debug in the future.
• Limited resources as a bootstrapped startup: Despite current market challenges (including sentiment), we remain committed to building for the future of NFTs. We've prioritized fair compensation for our collaborating artists, even when it means out-of-pocket expenses. Balancing paid work with startup development is challenging, but our passion for the project keeps us motivated. These constraints have pushed us to be more creative and efficient in our problem-solving approach.
