The problem Clubfund solves
Managing finances for university clubs is a complete mess. Outdated interfaces, multiple layers of bureaucracy, and payment processing fees, make raising funds and reimbursing students a soul-crushing experience.
I created Clubfund, an open platform where university leaders can easily create organizations that anyone can fund. Leaders can assign admins, create campaigns, and reimburse member or admin-created expenses. There is also the added transparency that comes from these organizations being on-chain. People that donate to these student-run organizations, whether it be family, friends, or alumni, can choose the causes or expenses their money goes towards.
Clubfund is also a win for students. Students can pay dues in one place and students can more easily get reimbursed for their travel or other club-related expenses.
The low fees and fast transaction speeds on Base make Clubfund a long-term, scalable solution.
Challenges I ran into
My initial obstacle was finding the right idea. I wanted to work on a project that solved a problem for me and could be used by other students at my university. I landed on the idea for a financial management tool for campus organizations because it is an area that I know very well from being an officer for CMU's Blockchain Club and other clubs.
I did not run into any severe technical challenges, as most features were pretty straight forward to implement with help from the OnchainKit examples. I sometimes ran into issues with indexing the contract data and modifying organization records after they were submitted on-chain. I also did not have the chance to properly integrate the fund wallet (on-ramp) component because I did not use a price oracle.
