The problem HaloSight solves
In the unique environment of a space station, ensuring astronaut safety is paramount due to extreme conditions, limited human intervention capabilities, and the critical need for rapid hazard detection. Manual monitoring is insufficient in detecting unsafe situations such as absence of essential personal protective equipment (PPE), presence of hazardous objects, fire or smoke incidents, or unintentional breaches of designated safety zones.
HaloSight addresses these challenges by providing an automated, intelligent monitoring system tailored for space station environments. It enables real-time detection of safety violations, PPE compliance, and fire hazards, with instant alerts and visualized safety zones. This system reduces reliance on human monitoring, enhances situational awareness, and significantly improves astronaut safety and operational reliability in space.
Challenges we ran into
Dataset Availability: Lack of space-specific PPE and hazard datasets, requiring use of synthetic or placeholder data.
Real-Time Video Processing: Streamlit integration caused threading/session conflicts, demanding careful handling of detection loops.
Safety Zone Management: Initially manual; later upgraded to an interactive canvas for improved usability.
Hardware Constraints: Limited GPU/CPU resources affected performance and scalability during testing.
Data Logging: Overwriting issues in logs were solved with auto-increment file handling to ensure no data loss.
