Why are you participating for Based LatAm?
Our participation in Based LatAm is driven by a strong motivation to bring financial empowerment to unbanked and underserved agricultural communities in Latin America through Gubbi. The platform aligns with the region’s needs, focusing on rural populations and promoting financial inclusion by tokenizing real-world assets such as land and livestock. Latin America's unique challenges, such as limited access to banking services, resonate deeply with our mission. We see this event as an opportunity to address these gaps using BASE technology, contributing to the region's growth and empowerment. Farmers in LATAM can create Real World Asset (RWA) tokens on the Gubbi platform, which are reviewed and approved by Verifiers or Ambassadors. Verifiers stake cryptocurrency to validate RWAs. Once approved, tokens are available for sale during a designated period, followed by a maturity phase.
The farmer sets an interest rate to attract buyers, and zero-interest loans can be offered for philanthropic or government-backed programs. If the repayment deadline is missed, Verifiers can execute real-world guarantees to repay token holders. Verifiers are compensated for their tasks, incentivizing them to ensure the system’s integrity.
What challenges are you focusing on?
We are addressing several critical challenges within our community through Gubbi with the help of Base. Our main focus is improving financial inclusion for unbanked and underserved populations in rural areas, particularly in Latin America. These communities often face significant barriers to accessing banking services. With Base, we are leveraging blockchain technology to tokenize real-world assets (such as land, livestock, and agricultural products) in order to provide people with access to loans, financial services, and opportunities for economic growth, empowering them in ways that were previously unavailable.
How does your submission address this challenge?
Our proposal, Gubbi, addresses the challenge of financial exclusion in rural areas of Latin America by allowing users to tokenize real-world assets, such as land, livestock, and agricultural products. By utilizing Base, Gubbi enables individuals to access loans and other financial services using their tokenized assets as collateral. This innovative approach empowers unbanked populations by providing them with new economic opportunities, increasing their access to capital, and promoting financial growth. The potential impact includes improved financial inclusion and economic mobility for underserved communities.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we faced with Gubbi was ensuring trust and security in the tokenization of real-world assets. Since many users in rural areas lack formal education and may not be familiar with blockchain technology, we had to develop an interface that was both user-friendly and culturally inclusive, especially by integrating voice-assisted navigation in indigenous languages. On a technical level, integrating secure verification and data storage using decentralized solutions like Irys, and ensuring scalability with Base, were critical hurdles that we overcame through collaboration and rigorous testing.
Additional Features
Before the Buildathon, we visited rural communities in Oaxaca, Mexico to identify their priority needs. We initially started as a platform for shipments and remittances on blockchain using voice commands, and we saw the need to add value to agricultural products and assets. During the Buildathon, we added new features, including integration with Base, which improved scalability and reduced transaction costs. We also incorporated an ambassador/validator program for asset verification, which strengthened trust in rural communities. Additionally, we improved the user experience by adding voice-assisted navigation in indigenous dialects, making the platform even more accessible for non-technical users in rural areas.
