The problem GreenMeal solves
GreenMeal tackles the global issue of food waste and hunger by providing an easy-to-use platform that helps individuals track and manage their food inventory. By sending timely alerts before items expire, GreenMeal encourages users to use ingredients efficiently, reducing waste and saving money. Additionally, it simplifies food donations by connecting users with nearby shelters and food banks, making it easy to share surplus food with those in need. This streamlined approach not only cuts down on household food waste but also supports local communities, creating a more sustainable and compassionate food system.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we faced was creating a reliable system for sending personalized expiration alerts based on each user’s unique preferences and food consumption habits. To tackle this, we developed a flexible reminder feature that allows users to set custom alerts. Additionally, coordinating pickups with local shelters for donated food proved complex, as it required real-time scheduling and communication. We overcame this by implementing a scheduling system that facilitates convenient pickup times and confirms receipt with recipient organizations, ensuring a seamless and effective donation process.
