The problem GirlsArena solves
According to research:
According to research:
- 78% of women in tech reports that they feel they have to work harder than their male coworkers to prove their worth.
- Women in tech are four times more likely than men to see gender bias as an obstacle to promotion.
- 66% of women in tech felt excluded from key social and network opportunities due to gender
Being a woman/girl in tech is never easy and just to make things a bit easier for all the amazing women and girls in tech we are centralizing all the events and opportunities for women in tech in one place so no one would ever miss out any opportunity and can access all of those information with ease.
Challenges we ran into
Our team really enjoyed working on GirlsArena and it was a great learning experience for all of us. However, like with every project we work with we did encounter few set backs such as:
- We did not find a single API to get real time events and opportunities data so we had to make our own custom API by scraping a lot of different websites.
- We felt like having some tags for each event would be helpful however that was something we needed to find by analyzing the texts itself as they were not readily available. While building an ML model to get the tags we did not get the result that we were expecting as the text to keyword training data that we used was not aligned to our need so later we had to roll back and use TF-IDF model to get as optimized result as possible.
- Last but not the least we did encounter some commit conflicts which we are sure no one really loves solving so after few set backs we had initially because of it we started using Github workflow as efficiently as we could and collaborated on GitHub asychronously throughout the project.
