In 1985, a special festivity was established initially for Krakow’s main church by Archbishop Cardinal Macharski, and later for other regions in Poland. By 1995, Pope John Paul II made this celebration a national event in Poland, following a request from the country’s religious leaders. On April 30, 2000, which was also the day Saint Faustina was officially recognized as a saint in Rome, the Pope decided that this celebration should be observed by all churches globally.

Who initiated this celebration? Sister Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun from the early 20th century, reported several visions of Jesus. In her writings, she particularly noted Jesus’ wish: ‘I want the first Sunday after Easter to be the Day of Compassion.
Jesus also shared the purpose of this day with her, as she wrote down: ‘I want the Day of Compassion to be a refuge and protection for all people, especially those who have done wrong. On this day, the full extent of my gentle compassion is available.
I bestow an abundance of blessings on those who come to the source of my compassion. Anyone who confesses and partakes in the Eucharist on this day will be completely absolved of their wrongdoings and their consequences. On this day, the heavenly gates from which blessings emerge are wide open.
