The problem FOREST GUARD solves
Deforestation in Kenya threatens biodiversity, local livelihoods, and climate resilience. Current monitoring methods rely on manual patrols or limited drone coverage, which are slow, expensive, and often reactive.
ForestGuard solves this by enabling continuous, automated forest monitoring using satellite imagery and AI.
The platform provides:
Real-time deforestation alerts
Tree-level monitoring across large forest areas
Historical analytics (seasonal, yearly, regional)
A dashboard for forest rangers, researchers, and policymakers
Instant visibility on illegal logging hotspots
Challenges we ran into
One challenge our team faced was integrating the frontend dashboard with the backend API while the AI model was still under development. The backend developer had created the endpoints, but the data structure wasn’t fully aligned with the frontend components yet. This caused broken UI sections and “failed to load data” errors.
To overcome this, we worked together to create temporary placeholder data and clearly define the expected API responses. Once the backend and frontend were speaking the same “language,” everything synced smoothly, and we were able to continue development in parallel.
