Your solution to prevent food waste and hunger
The problem FoodSave solves
The goal of the problem statement was to address two issues: the fact that a lot of food is wasted every day and that some people go without food. The second issue was that, despite 66% of the population working in agriculture, Nepal's output was insufficient for its population. We have imagined an application that covers both areas in order to do that.
The FAO Save Food World Food Waste and Loss Initiative estimates that 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted annually, costing the global economy close to $940 billion. One in nine people—or 793 million people—have insufficient food to consume, according to another FAO study. While 4.6 million people in Nepal are considered to be food insecure, 66% of all garbage is made up of food waste. FAO estimates that 874 million hungry people might be fed if one-quarter of the food that is currently lost or wasted could be conserved.
We therefore develop a technique to prevent food waste and lessen the problem of hunger. The main causes of food waste are overproduction and surplus food. In 2017, LeanPath tracked food waste in more than 1200 kitchens and revealed that outproduction is the main culprit of the food waste generation in foodservice establishments. In order to maintain a healthy supply-demand balance, farmers are provided with analytics regarding the current market trend and record analysis. Additionally, through our partnerships with various businesses, we allow customers to save money by purchasing food from cafes, restaurants, and other establishments that would have otherwise gone to waste. People who could only afford one meal a day may eat twice as often if they connect to the offers. For all parties, it is a win-win situation.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest issue was coming up with a solution to the given problem that would work the best. It was difficult and enjoyable at the same time to spend the most of the hackathon working on ideas before working quickly on the technical side.
It was challenging to integrate blockchain into our application. We sought a local solution, but non-technical folks rarely use the Metamask wallet. Making the product as common as web2 and using blockchain to keep the individual transactions at the backend was another challenge we encountered. Using Github, we encountered merge conflicts as well.
Last but not least, sparrowSMS integration was incredibly difficult.
