The Problem It Solves
Freelance transactions today rely heavily on centralized platforms to manage payments, file exchanges, and dispute resolution. This creates significant trust and security challenges for both clients and freelancers.
Freelancers often face the risk of non-payment after delivering work. Clients hesitate to release funds upfront without assurance of quality delivery. Additionally, centralized platforms charge high commission fees and store sensitive files on centralized servers, increasing the risk of data breaches and unauthorized file usage.
There is currently no seamless, decentralized solution that ensures:
- 🔒 Secure and trustless payment handling
- 📦 Protection of digital intellectual property before payment
- ⚖️ Transparent and automated workflow management
- 🚫 Reduced dependency on intermediaries
💡 How FairDeal Makes It Easier and Safer
FairDeal is a decentralized freelance marketplace built on the Stellar blockchain using Soroban smart contracts. It replaces trust in intermediaries with trust in code.
🛡️ 1. Trustless Escrow Payments
Funds are locked inside a smart contract at the time of job creation. The platform does not control the funds. Payment is automatically released to the freelancer only when the client approves the work, or refunded if the deal is cancelled.
This eliminates payment fraud and ensures fairness for both parties.
🔐 2. Encrypted & Secure File Delivery
- Files are encrypted before being uploaded to IPFS
- Clients can only view watermarked previews before approval
- Original files are accessible only after payment confirmation
This prevents unauthorized downloads and protects intellectual property.
🌐 3. Decentralized Storage
Work files are stored on IPFS rather than centralized servers, reducing the risk of censorship, data breaches, and single-point failures.
⚡ 4. Reduced Friction
- Wallet confirmations are required only for fund movements
- Submissions and revisions happen without unnecessary blockchain popups
- Seamless UX for both freelancers and clients
🎯 What People Can Use It For
FairDeal can be used for:
- 💻 Freelance development projects
- 🎨 Graphic design and digital art commissions
- ✍️ Content writing and media production
- 🧠 Consulting and technical audits
- 🪙 NFT and Web3 creative collaborations
🚀 Impact
FairDeal makes freelance transactions safer, transparent, and trustless. It protects both money and intellectual property while removing intermediaries and reducing platform fees.
By combining decentralized escrow, encrypted file sharing, and automated workflows, FairDeal enables secure peer-to-peer collaboration in the digital economy.
Challenges I ran into
🚧 Challenges I Ran Into
Building FairDeal required integrating blockchain smart contracts, encrypted file storage, and a smooth Web2-like user experience — which introduced several technical challenges.
🔐 1. Smart Contract State Synchronization
Challenge:
Ensuring that the frontend, backend (jobs.json), and Soroban smart contract states always remained synchronized was difficult. A mismatch between off-chain job metadata and on-chain escrow status could cause incorrect UI states.
Solution:
I implemented strict state validation checks before every critical action (approve, cancel, submit). The backend verifies the contract state before updating local metadata, preventing inconsistent transitions. This ensured reliable multi-state workflow management.
💳 2. Wallet Signature Friction
Challenge:
Requiring wallet confirmations for every action created a poor user experience. Frequent Freighter popups slowed down the workflow and made the app feel heavy.
Solution:
I redesigned the architecture so that only fund-moving operations (create_job, approve_work, cancel_deal) require wallet signatures. Non-financial actions like submit_work are handled off-chain. This significantly improved UX while maintaining security.
🔐 3. Secure File Encryption & Key Management
Challenge:
Encrypting files before IPFS upload while ensuring secure key handling was complex. If keys were exposed too early, clients could decrypt files before approval.
Solution:
Files are encrypted client-side using AES-256-CBC before upload. Encryption keys are securely stored on the backend and are only accessible after smart contract approval. Additionally, watermarked previews were generated to allow review without exposing original files.
🌐 4. Smart Contract Deployment & Optimization
Challenge:
Deploying and optimizing the Soroban smart contract on Stellar Testnet required handling WASM builds, optimization steps, and contract ID configuration properly. Minor mistakes caused deployment failures or incorrect contract interaction.
Solution:
I automated the build and optimization process using the Stellar CLI workflow and carefully verified contract IDs in environment variables. Extensive local testing with mock transactions helped prevent runtime errors.
🔄 5. Preventing Double-Spend & Duplicate Approvals
Challenge:
Ensuring that funds could not be released twice or that jobs could not transition into invalid states was critical.
Solution:
The smart contract enforces strict state validation. Once a job is marked as approved or cancelled, further state transitions are blocked at the contract level — making it impossible to exploit via frontend manipulation.
🎯 Key Learning
The biggest hurdle was balancing security, decentralization, and user experience.
By carefully separating on-chain and off-chain responsibilities, validating every state transition, and encrypting data before storage, I was able to create a system that is both secure and user-friendly.
