Improper waste segregation and disposal is one of the biggest challenges faced by cities today. Most households and communities mix organic, inorganic, plastic, and hazardous waste, making it difficult to recycle efficiently. This leads to:

  • Lack of awareness and incentives for people to follow proper waste management practices

Our web-based platform provides an AI-powered, reward-based waste management system that makes segregation, disposal, and recycling smarter, safer, and more rewarding.

    • An AI-based recognition system helps identify waste type (organic, inorganic, plastic, metal, etc.).

    • Waste is weighed for accurate credit allocation.
  3. Earn & Redeem Rewards

    • Users receive credit points based on the weight and quality of waste.
    • Points can be redeemed as discounts, cashback, deals, and coupons usable on partner apps.

    • Nearest traders/collectors are automatically assigned to pick up waste from representatives.
    • Waste is separated, recycled, and reused efficiently.
  5. SOCIETY Platform (Awareness & Community)

    • A space where users share blogs, posts, and images about recycling.

Challenges we ran into

🛠️ Challenges I Ran Into

While building this project, we faced several technical and non-technical hurdles that tested our problem-solving skills:

  1. AI Model Accuracy for Waste Classification

    • Challenge: Training an AI model to correctly identify different categories of waste (organic, inorganic, plastic, metal, hazardous, etc.) was difficult due to limited dataset availability.
    • Solution: We created a custom dataset by collecting and labeling images, and used transfer learning with pre-trained models (e.g., Teachable Machine / TensorFlow). This improved accuracy without requiring huge amounts of data.
  2. Integrating Door-to-Door Pickup Scheduling

    • Challenge: Designing a system that could assign the nearest representative or trader in real time was complex.
    • Solution: We implemented a location-based service using geolocation APIs and optimized assignments with simple distance-based matching.
  3. Reward System Implementation

    • Challenge: Ensuring fair credit allocation based on both weight and quality of waste.
    • Solution: We introduced a scalable points system where different waste categories have different weight-to-points ratios, ensuring transparency and fairness.
  4. Emergency Waste Pickup Feature

    • Challenge: Prioritizing urgent hazardous waste requests without affecting normal pickups.
    • Solution: We added a priority flag in our request queue system so that emergency pickups are auto-assigned to the nearest available representative first.
  5. Community Engagement (SOCIETY Platform)

    • Challenge: Encouraging users to actively post and share their recycling experiences.
    • Solution: We added gamification elements like badges, leaderboards, and reward bonuses for active contributors.
  6. Frontend–Backend Integration Issues

    • Challenge: During development, we faced bugs with API calls not syncing properly between React frontend and Node.js backend.
    • Solution: We debugged using Postman and implemented CORS handling to ensure smooth communication.
  7. Time Management

    • Challenge: With limited time during the hackathon, it was tough to implement all features at once.
    • Solution: We prioritized the core features (waste recognition, pickup system, rewards) first, and then added additional features (store, SOCIETY, chatbot) incrementally.
