Why are you participating for Based LatAm?

The crypto ecosystem in Latin America (LatAm) is both essential and challenging. While crypto adoption is growing rapidly in regions like Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, the technological barriers often make it difficult for new users to fully participate. These countries also face significant economic challenges such as inflation, making crypto an important alternative, but one that remains complex for the average person to use.

Our motivation is to simplify crypto adoption in LatAm through EmojiPay, making it easy for users with little to no technical knowledge to start using crypto seamlessly. By leveraging Base's scalable infrastructure, EmojiPay provides a solution that requires no wallet setup or understanding of complex crypto terminology. Users can simply log in using Google and send or receive crypto by exchanging emoji handles. This makes crypto accessible to people who need it the most, without the technological friction that typically comes with it.

This approach helps onboard new users into the crypto ecosystem in regions where it's needed most, providing a tool for financial inclusion and protection from local economic challenges.

What challenges are you focusing on?

In LatAm, the challenge of onboarding new users to crypto is significant due to the complexity of wallets and the intimidating nature of blockchain technology. EmojiPay addresses this by eliminating the need for manual wallet management. Users can sign up and immediately send and receive crypto by simply using their Google account for authentication.

Additionally, there’s a challenge around affordability. Subscription services and group purchases are often difficult to afford individually due to the lower purchasing power in LatAm. EmojiPay introduces group payments, allowing users to pool resources with friends or family—even if they don't know each other personally—to share subscriptions or other expenses. This feature makes services more accessible to users in LatAm by spreading costs among a group.

How does your submission address this challenge?

EmojiPay integrates Base's decentralized infrastructure by using BaseNames to link emoji handles to crypto wallets. We also leverage OKTO SDK for custodial wallet management, allowing users to log in via Google OAuth and instantly have a wallet created for them without any complex setup.

Group payments are facilitated by a smart contract on Base that collects funds from multiple participants without the platform ever touching the money. This ensures that all transactions remain decentralized, while the custodial setup simplifies the onboarding process. The potential impact is huge: users across LatAm can easily send and receive crypto or split payments in groups, with no prior crypto knowledge required.

Challenges I ran into

The primary technical challenge was finding a solution for custodial wallet management that could seamlessly integrate with Base. After research, I identified OKTO SDK as the best option, but it is currently only available on mainnet, which led to another challenge: testing. Since all tests had to be run on the mainnet, they incurred costs, complicating the testing phase.

Additionally, ensuring the smooth integration of group payments while maintaining decentralization posed a technical hurdle. It required careful smart contract development to handle group funds securely without introducing complexity to the end-user experience.

Additional Features

During the hackathon, I integrated NFT BaseNames to enhance the emoji handles, providing users with unique identifiers that could be used across platforms. This feature improves user engagement and provides a link between their emoji handle and Base’s ecosystem.

Furthermore, I implemented the group payment feature using Base's smart contracts. This allows users to define an amount, and the smart contract handles the collection of funds from multiple participants, enabling decentralized and transparent group payments without requiring each user to manually send transactions.
