• Custom emoji are locked inside walled gardens.—so there’s still no open, universal way to share feelings across the web.

• Emoji creators lack sustainable revenue streams.

• Crypto space still lacks products that friends and family can easily enjoy together.

Solution
Emochat is a chat app built on XMTP where every emoji is minted as an ERC-1155 NFT. Anyone can turn any image (PNG, JPG, etc.) into an emoji, mint it on-chain, and use it instantly in fully encrypted, wallet-to-wallet conversations.

By integrating XMTP—an open protocol and network for secure Web3 messaging—Emochat delivers decentralized chat you can take with you: carry your identity and message history into any other XMTP-compatible app, while your tokenized emoji travel anywhere the ERC-1155 standard is supported. Next, we’ll leverage XMTP Agent to deliver an AI-powered chat experience.

Challenges I ran into

XMTP’s group-chat feature is still in its early days.
Because the official docs offer only limited guidance, we had to experiment and sift through the codebase to figure out how to monitor group threads and capture key metadata—who sent each message and when.
