Why are you participating for Based Africa?
We are participating to leverage blockchain for solving Africa's plastic waste problem. Growing up in Africa, I’ve seen the environmental damage caused by plastic pollution, and EcoCollect aims to combat this while incentivizing individuals with economic rewards. The hackathon offers an opportunity to showcase how blockchain can drive positive change in Africa.
What challenges are you focusing on?
The challenge we are addressing is the overwhelming plastic waste crisis in Africa. Communities lack efficient recycling systems, and there is little incentive for individuals to engage in proper waste management. This issue affects both the environment and public health, and it requires urgent solutions.
How does your submission address this challenge?
EcoCollect incentivizes individuals to collect waste plastics in exchange for tokens, which can be redeemed for rewards. By partnering with recycling companies, we ensure that the collected plastics are properly recycled, reducing waste and contributing to a cleaner environment. Our platform bridges the gap between environmental action and economic benefits for local communities.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges we faced around plastic waste management include difficulties in coordinating with recycling partners and ensuring real-time tracking of plastic collections. The fragmented nature of these processes often leads to inefficiencies and a lack of transparency. EcoCollect provides a solution by offering a transparent and immutable ledger for tracking plastic waste from collection to recycling. Through tokenization, individuals can be rewarded for their efforts in real-time, while smart contracts streamline partnerships with recycling companies, ensuring seamless coordination and accountability.. On the technical side, creating a user-friendly platform that could handle both tokenization and partnerships with recycling companies was a key challenge, which we overcame by refining the smart contract backend systems.
