dOASIS is expanded as 'Decentralized & Organized Archiving System for Information Storage'. The app aims to make geospatial data more accessible to the public.
The problem dOASIS solves
Centralised models involve storing geospatial data as Shape files and TIFF on distributed node setups of maybe 4 or 5 server locations. The data stored must be displayed on the webpage in compliance with Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) guidelines. This involves routing both vector and raster files through the Wep Map Service (WMS), Web Feature Service (WFS) and Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) for better rendering. In case of any mishap in anyone of the server locations, all data in the distribution is supjected to risk mainly because most of the data is simply queryable and has no factorisation for access. The setup also doesn't always account for load balancing.
Challenges we ran into
The concept of Web3 was novel to the whole team. We were quick to decide on an application but were divided on the implementation. After contemplating the pros and the cons, we decided that Filecoin seemed convienient to our needs. Initially, we used the IPFS client to upload files directly and then accessed them through the addresses. We made a working prototype and hosted it on GitHub. Presently, we're working on a react app that will dynamically update itself with every upload. We expect to accommadate the OGC's standards so that every file can be mapped to the relevant tile.
