Demeter

Autonomous Coconut Harvesting Machine.

The problem Demeter solves

India, the third largest producer of coconuts in the world, has been grappling with a crisis in the industry caused by a shortage of coconut harvesting workforce.

Labour has become the most expensive aspect of coconut harvesting which accounts to more than 50% of the total harvest cost.

Harvesting can cost between Rs.40 to Rs.50 per tree and can go as high as Rs.100 in cities like Chennai.

The number of coconut harvesters (labourers) is not only short of requirement but also declining rapidly.

The labour costs in general have been significantly high (it goes to more than ₹50,000 per month).

Challenges we ran into

The main challenges faced during the development process are as follows:

  1. Setting up the environment for Deep Learning model is one of the biggest challenge - Stack Overflow
  2. As the system is built on Deep Learning, finding the appropriate system to train the model is a challenge - VIT Resources.
  3. Training the Multi-Class(11 classes) model with respect to the existing resources and Data collection - GitHub Issues & Google Opensource Images.
  4. Simulation of Climber mechanism - Literature review and self study about various Dynamic Analysis Softwares.
  5. Fabrication of robotic arm - Team effort to make sure we have a functional robotic arm
