Trade-offs and shortcuts while building

  1. Initial Hardware Cost vs. Long-Term Savings
Trade-off: High-quality solar panels and batteries were costly, so we initially opted for mid-range solar panels and modular battery storage.
Shortcut: Used existing infrastructure where possible to reduce costs.
Future Improvement: Upgrade to higher-efficiency solar panels and better energy storage solutions as funding grows.
  2. Blockchain Selection for Energy Trading
Trade-off: Public blockchains (e.g., Ethereum) had high transaction fees, so we used a permissioned blockchain for faster, lower-cost transactions.
Shortcut: Deployed smart contracts with minimal features to launch faster.
Future Improvement: Explore Layer 2 scaling solutions (e.g., Polygon) or alternative low-cost blockchain networks.
  3. AI-Driven Energy Optimization vs. Basic Rule-Based System
Trade-off: AI models for energy forecasting required large datasets, so we started with a rule-based optimization system.
Shortcut: Used basic historical consumption data to make decisions instead of real-time AI models.
Future Improvement: Implement machine learning for better demand prediction and energy efficiency.
  4. IoT Sensor Deployment vs. Cost Constraints
Trade-off: Full IoT deployment across all microgrids was expensive, so we prioritized installation in pilot regions first.
Shortcut: Manually collected data in some locations to simulate IoT sensor readings.
Future Improvement: Scale up IoT implementation for real-time energy monitoring across all microgrids.
  5. EV Charging Infrastructure Deployment
Trade-off: Installing fast-charging stations everywhere was costly, so we deployed basic charging stations first.
Shortcut: Focused on slow-charging EV stations that are cheaper but take longer.
Future Improvement: Gradually upgrade to fast-charging stations based on demand.
  6. UI/UX Simplicity vs. Advanced Features
Trade-off: A feature-rich user dashboard required more development time, so we launched with a basic but functional UI.
