SmartWaste: Transforming Waste Management Through Digital Innovation

A Comprehensive Digital Recycling Ecosystem

SmartWaste is a digital platform designed to make recycling more convenient, rewarding, and accessible. It connects users with verified recycling centers through an integrated mapping system while allowing them to track their recycling history, monitor environmental impact, and earn money from recyclable materials.

A key innovation is the Group Pickup feature, which allows users heading to the same recycling center to coordinate and share transportation. This reduces individual transportation costs while minimizing unnecessary trips and associated carbon emissions. By turning recycling into a collaborative activity, SmartWaste makes sustainable waste management more affordable and accessible to communities.

SmartWaste also uses a points-based reward system to encourage consistent recycling habits. Users earn points through recycling activities and can redeem them for rewards from participating brands such as GrabFood, McDonald's, KFC, Tealive, and Starbucks.

Operational Efficiency and Economic Value

SmartWaste provides real-time pricing information for recyclable materials such as aluminum, copper, and electronic waste, helping users understand the potential value of their materials and make informed recycling decisions.

Users can track their earnings, recycling history, and estimated carbon savings through a centralized dashboard. The Group Pickup system also automatically calculates how transportation costs are shared between participants, providing transparency over individual costs and savings.

Safety, Security, and Community Trust

SmartWaste prioritizes user security through secure authentication, password hashing, session management, and transaction records. Notifications provide users with updates on important activities such as completed transactions and payment confirmations.

The platform also promotes community engagement through leaderboards and achievement systems, encouraging positive competition and recognizing users for their environmental contributions.

Creating Measurable Impact

SmartWaste brings recycling-center discovery, shared transportation, material pricing, digital payments, rewards, and environmental tracking together in one platform. By combining convenience with financial and social incentives, SmartWaste transforms recycling from an inconvenient task into a rewarding community experience.

Ultimately, SmartWaste aims to turn waste into value while encouraging sustainable habits and supporting a more efficient circular economy.

Challenges we ran into

Development Challenges & Solutions

Map Rendering and Location Services

The Problem

One of the main challenges I encountered was getting the interactive map to render reliably. SmartWaste uses Leaflet.js with OpenStreetMap to display recycling centers and user locations, but the map would sometimes appear as a grey box, with tiles failing to load or markers appearing in incorrect positions.

The main cause was that the map was initialized while its container was hidden inside a page tab. Since the container had no dimensions at the time, Leaflet could not correctly calculate the map's size and positioning. This caused rendering issues when users later opened the Locator page.

The Solution

I solved this using a lazy initialization and forced recalculation approach. Instead of initializing the map immediately, it is created when the Locator tab is first opened, ensuring that the container has proper dimensions. I also trigger a map resize whenever users return to the Locator tab to prevent rendering issues when switching between pages.

I implemented a fallback location system as well. If users deny location permissions or location services are unavailable, the map still loads using default coordinates and displays the available recycling centers instead of failing completely.

The Geolocation Challenge

Another challenge was providing users with clear feedback while their location was being obtained. Geolocation can take several seconds because the browser must request permission and acquire the user's coordinates.

To improve the experience, I implemented status indicators that show different stages such as "Waiting," "Requesting," "Success," and "Error." Once the location is obtained, the user's coordinates and location marker are displayed on the map. This makes the process more transparent and prevents users from assuming the application is unresponsive.

The Distance Calculation Challenge

I also needed an accurate way to calculate the distance between users and recycling centers. I implemented the haversine formula to calculate distances based on latitude and longitude coordinates.

For usability, distances below one kilometer are displayed in meters, while longer distances are displayed in kilometers. I also implemented dynamic sorting so that recycling centers are automatically arranged from nearest to farthest based on the user's current location.

This required recalculating distances whenever the user's location changed and updating the displayed results without refreshing the page. As a result, users can immediately see the most convenient recycling options based on their location.
