Crowdhealth: Empowering patients to fund life-saving medical treatments through community-driven crowdfunding.
Why are you participating for Based Africa?
We are participating in Based Africa to bring transformative healthcare solutions to underserved communities across the continent. Africa faces significant challenges in healthcare funding, and too often, patients with life-threatening conditions are unable to access the treatment they need due to financial constraints. Crowdhealth seeks to alleviate this by leveraging blockchain technology to create a transparent, secure, and accessible platform for medical crowdfunding.
Our connection to the region is deeply rooted in a desire to empower African communities with tools that enable them to take control of their healthcare outcomes. We believe Africa's vibrant tech ecosystem, combined with Base's blockchain infrastructure, provides the perfect environment for impactful, scalable healthcare solutions. Crowdhealth is not just a platform—it's a movement to save lives, starting with Africa and expanding globally.
What challenges are you focusing on?
The primary challenge we are addressing is the lack of access to affordable healthcare for individuals facing critical medical emergencies. In many parts of Africa, public healthcare systems are underfunded, and private healthcare is out of reach for many. This results in patients unable to access life-saving treatments or medications due to financial barriers.
We also aim to tackle the issue of trust in charitable donations. Many people are reluctant to donate due to concerns about where their money is going and whether it will be used appropriately. Through blockchain technology, Crowdhealth ensures full transparency and accountability, allowing donors to track the use of funds in real time.
How does your submission address this challenge?
Crowdhealth directly addresses the healthcare funding gap by offering a decentralized crowdfunding platform where patients can share their medical stories and request financial assistance. The platform is built on blockchain, ensuring transparency, security, and global accessibility.
Using smart contracts, donations are locked and released according to predefined milestones, ensuring that funds are only used for verified medical treatments. This system not only builds trust among donors but also provides a lifeline to patients in dire need of financial support. By connecting local communities with global donors, Crowdhealth has the potential to revolutionize healthcare accessibility, particularly in regions where healthcare infrastructure is underdeveloped.
The impact is clear: more lives saved, more communities empowered, and a scalable model that can address healthcare funding challenges worldwide.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we faced was the integration of blockchain technology with traditional medical systems. Hospitals and clinics in many regions do not have experience working with decentralized platforms, making it difficult to establish partnerships and ensure smooth payment flows.
We also encountered technical hurdles around managing sensitive patient data on a public blockchain, where privacy is paramount. To overcome this, we will implement a hybrid solution using encrypted off-chain storage for sensitive information, while keeping the fundraising process transparent on-chain.
Non-technical challenges included gaining trust from both the healthcare community and potential users, as the concept of decentralized crowdfunding for healthcare is still relatively new.
