Closing Bell

The hidden cost of tokenized stocks, finally visib

The problem Closing Bell solves

Tokenized stocks on Solana, such as AAPLx, TSLAx, and SPYx, allow users to gain exposure to traditional stocks through blockchain-based tokens. However, these tokens do not always trade at the same price as their underlying stocks.

Most trading interfaces show price impact and slippage relative to the liquidity pool's current price. What they don't clearly show is whether the token itself is already trading at a premium compared to the underlying stock.

For example, our observations found SPYx trading approximately 0.57% above its underlying stock price and AAPLx approximately 0.27% above. This means users could pay an additional $11.40 on a $2,000 SPYx purchase before accounting for other trading costs.

Closing Bell makes this hidden cost visible.

It compares tokenized stock prices against their underlying stock prices and helps users understand how much extra they may be paying.

The project provides two tools:

Web application: Users select a tokenized stock and enter their investment amount to estimate the additional cost associated with its price premium.
CLI tool: A command-line utility that calculates and logs observed price differences in CSV format for further analysis.

Closing Bell helps users make more informed decisions by showing a cost that conventional trading interfaces may overlook.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was identifying a pricing difference that conventional trading interfaces do not clearly communicate.

Initially, I focused on understanding price impact and slippage. However, I realized that comparing a trade against its own liquidity pool does not reveal whether the entire pool is already trading above the underlying stock's price.

This required separating two different costs: the price impact caused by an individual trade and the existing premium of the tokenized stock itself.

Another challenge was comparing prices across traditional financial markets and Solana. Tokenized stocks trade on blockchain-based markets, while their underlying stocks follow traditional market hours. Differences in trading hours, price update frequency, and liquidity can affect price comparisons.

I also investigated potential explanations for the observed premiums, including dividend-related pricing differences. However, I could not establish a definitive cause from the available observations.

Rather than presenting an unverified explanation, I focused on making the measured price differences transparent and documenting the limitations of the analysis.

The key learning was that showing users the cost of their trade is not the same as showing them whether the asset itself is fairly priced relative to its underlying reference.
