Dual AI Public Fact-Checking & Phishing Guard

The problem CivicPulse solves

What People Can Use CivicPulse For

CivicPulse acts as a real-time, decentralized digital safety filter against viral misinformation and cyber fraud. Key use cases include:

  • Verifying Private Scams & Phishing Alerts: Citizens can paste suspicious bank warnings, parcel delivery alerts, or tax notices directly into the app to detect malicious links and phishing attempts before clicking.
  • Debunking Viral Family Chat Rumors: Users can inspect forwarded WhatsApp/Telegram claims or breaking news headlines to verify their factual accuracy before sharing them further.
  • Instant Peer Education: Users can generate a clean, visual Share Card with clear safety advice to counter fake news directly in community or group chats.
  • Auditing Digital Claims: Journalists, researchers, and skeptical users can independently trace every verification back to an auditable decentralized execution ID.

How It Makes Existing Tasks Easier and Safer

  • Sub-3-Second Turnaround (vs. Hours or Days): Traditional fact-checking agencies take hours or days to research and publish editorial debunks. CivicPulse provides instant verification in under 3 seconds, stopping fraud before panic sets in.
  • Reaches Dark Social & Private Channels: Most existing verification tools only monitor public platforms (like Twitter/X or news feeds). CivicPulse allows users to paste raw private messages directly, bypassing website scrapers and anti-bot firewalls.
  • Removes "Blind Trust" with Multi-AI Consensus: Instead of relying on a single black-box AI that can hallucinate or exhibit bias, CivicPulse cross-audits claims across two independent models (DeepSeek-V4-Flash and MiniMax-M2.7). If the models disagree by more than 25 points, the system explicitly flags the uncertainty rather than forcing a misleading answer.
  • Actionable Evidence Over Vague Labels: Rather than merely labeling a message as "Fake," CivicPulse breaks down specific forensic markers—such as fake lookalike domains, manufactured urgency, and credential-harvesting tactics—making it easy for non-technical users and seniors to understand why it is dangerous.
  • Auditable Verification Trail: Every verification is linked to a Gonka Request ID and stored with an integrity hash, giving users a tamper-evident receipt that proves the verdict was generated transparently and honestly.
  • Zero-Friction Accessibility: Delivered as a lightweight web app supporting English, Bahasa Melayu, Chinese, and Tamil, with high-contrast options for seniors, ensuring protection is accessible across generations without requiring complex installations.

Challenges we ran into

The Hurdle: Dual-Engine Latency Bottlenecks & Node Timeouts

Because CivicPulse relies on a parallel cross-audit pipeline querying two distinct models on the Gonka network (DeepSeek-V4-Flash and MiniMax-M2.7), our total response time was fundamentally bottlenecked by the slowest responding node. During peak network loads or decentralized cold starts, one engine would occasionally hang or take 6+ seconds, causing frontend request timeouts and broken consensus calculations.

How We Overcame It

  1. Parallel Execution via Promise Orchestration: We refactored the verification pipeline to dispatch both inference requests concurrently rather than sequentially, cutting nominal response latency in half.
  2. Hedged Timeout & Fallback Architecture: We implemented a strict 3.5-second timeout window per node. If a model fails to return within this threshold, the system automatically triggers a retry against an alternate node or falls back safely rather than hanging indefinitely.
  3. Graceful Degradation: Instead of failing silently or crashing the client session, the frontend transparently flags the verdict as a partial audit when a node fails to respond, maintaining transparency without giving users false certainties.
