Why are you participating for Based LatAm?

My connection to the LATAM region lies in my frequent travels to the Caribbean and Cuba, there and my passion for building solutions that resonate with real needs. Countries in LATAM has a rich, diverse culture, but many communities are fragmented or disconnected. Citizen is my contribution to bridge these gaps, providing a tool that empowers local DAOs to engage their members, drive awareness, and ensure that everyone's voice is heard and counted in decision-making processes.

I see the immense potential in using decentralized technology to solve real-world challenges faced by the Latin American region, particularly in fostering stronger community connections and trust. LATAM communities often face barriers in governance and decision-making for example in the carribean due to a lack of transparency and centralized structures. Through Citizen, I aim to address these issues by empowering DAOs to create transparent, decentralized governance structures that foster greater inclusivity and trust.

The Based LatAm hackathon provides the perfect opportunity to showcase Citizen and its potential to enhance governance, trust, and community involvement across LATAM, especially as the region increasingly embraces decentralized solutions.

What challenges are you focusing on?

Many existing systems make it difficult for community members to actively participate in decision-making, leading to feelings of disconnection and mistrust. Citizen empowers communities by providing DAOs with a transparent, on-chain platform where everyone can engage in clear, auditable voting and delegation.

Base’s infrastructure allows us to scale seamlessly across multiple DAOs, ensuring that the technical backbone supports our mission of transparency, inclusivity, and community empowerment in the LATAM region.

With the help of Base, we’re tackling the challenge of inefficient delegation processes. Often, voting power is not distributed effectively, resulting in suboptimal governance outcomes. Citizen, through Base, offers a secure and streamlined voting mechanism that simplifies delegation, ensures accountability, and encourages active participation.

Additionally, community connection is a pressing issue in LATAM, where social fragmentation can be a barrier to growth. By offering DAOs a platform to publicize their proposals, Citizen increases visibility and awareness across multiple communities, driving stronger engagement and fostering a sense of shared purpose.

How does your submission address this challenge?

Citizen tackles the issues of disconnected governance and lack of transparency by providing a decentralized platform for Latin American (LATAM) DAOs to manage proposals and conduct transparent voting. Built on Base, Citizen ensures on-chain voting and delegation, offering a transparent, auditable process that builds trust and accountability within DAOs.

  In essence, Citizen leverages Base to solve transparency, engagement, and community connection challenges, enabling more democratic and inclusive governance for LATAM communities.

Challenges I ran into

1. Integration with Multiple DAO Contracts: A key challenge was integrating different DAOs’ smart contracts, each with unique ABIs, functions, and governance logic. Managing the varying structures made it complex to create a unified platform that interacts smoothly with all of them. Solution: While still in progress we are building a flexible contract interaction layer using Base OnChainKit, allowing us to standardize interaction processes while supporting unique DAO structures.

2. Transparent Voting on a Multichain Platform: Ensuring a seamless, transparent voting experience across multiple blockchains was technically challenging due to the complexity of cross-chain interactions. Solution: We focused on Base as the primary chain for contract deployments to simplify the voting process while maintaining transparency and scalability.

3. Public DAO Listing and Engagement: Creating a public, user-friendly interface that lists DAO proposals while encouraging engagement posed a non-technical challenge. Making the platform intuitive for both crypto-native and non-native users was crucial for community uptake. Solution: We built a React-based frontend with a focus on usability and accessibility, ensuring that users can easily discover DAOs and vote, regardless of their technical background.

4. Scalability and Backend Stability: Initially, we struggled with backend stability, especially for tracking and registering DAOs dynamically as they list on the platform. Solution: While still a work in progress, we’re implementing a more robust backend architecture to support scalability and seamless DAO management.

These hurdles helped us refine our approach, ensuring Citizen is both technically sound and user-friendly for the LATAM community.
