ChainCart
E-Commerce Blockchain Site
The problem ChainCart solves
ChainCart is a full-stack blockchain DApp that enables secure, transparent, and decentralized e-commerce by eliminating intermediaries and relying on smart contracts for trustless transactions. People can use it to buy and sell goods or services globally with crypto payments, ensuring funds are held in escrow until both parties meet agreed conditions, reducing fraud risk. By leveraging blockchain, ChainCart offers verifiable product authenticity (e.g., via NFTs), transparent transaction history, and censorship-resistant access, making online trading safer and more reliable. This not only streamlines payments and reduces fees but also empowers users to maintain full control over their assets and data while conducting business in a truly peer-to-peer manner.
Challenges I ran into
While building ChainCart, one major hurdle I faced was handling product listing images on a decentralized platform. Storing images directly on-chain was expensive and inefficient due to high gas costs and size limitations. Initially, I tried base64 encoding images and saving them in smart contract storage, but this quickly became impractical for anything beyond small thumbnails.
To overcome this, I switched to IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) for decentralized file storage. I integrated an IPFS API to upload images and store only the resulting content hash (CID) in the smart contract. This way, the blockchain holds a lightweight, permanent reference to the file, while the actual media is served from a distributed network. This not only cut down gas costs drastically but also kept the platform fully decentralized and censorship-resistant.
