Tamper-proof academic certificates on blockchain

The problem CertiChain solves

Academic certificate fraud is a widespread issue, where fake or tampered certificates are used during job applications and higher education admissions. Traditional certificate verification processes are manual, time-consuming, and require dependency on issuing institutions, making them inefficient and unreliable.

CertiChain solves this problem by providing a tamper-proof, blockchain-based certificate issuance and verification system. Educational institutions can issue certificates that are securely stored on the blockchain, ensuring immutability and long-term trust.

With CertiChain, certificates can be verified in multiple secure ways:

  • By entering the Certificate ID

  • By entering the Certificate Hash

  • By scanning a QR code embedded in the certificate

The QR code verification enables instant validation using any device, making the process fast, user-friendly, and accessible even for non-technical users. Once verified, the system securely retrieves and displays the student’s authentic details directly from the blockchain.

This approach completely eliminates certificate forgery, reduces verification time from days to seconds, and removes the need for manual confirmation from institutions. CertiChain ensures transparency, trust, and scalability for students, educational institutions, employers, and recruiters.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges was understanding how to securely store certificate data on the blockchain while avoiding storage of large or sensitive information. Since storing complete certificate details on-chain is costly and inefficient, we had to carefully design a structure using a Certificate Hash and Certificate ID instead of raw data.

Another challenge was integrating blockchain data with the web application. Fetching certificate details in real time using the Certificate ID and hash, and ensuring the frontend correctly reflected the blockchain response, required multiple iterations and debugging.

Generating and managing QR code–based verification links was also challenging. We had to ensure that scanning the QR code consistently redirected to the correct verification page and reliably fetched the corresponding student details without errors.

Handling blockchain transaction delays and ensuring a smooth user experience during certificate issuance was another hurdle. We addressed this by providing clear status feedback to the user while the transaction was being confirmed.

Finally, coordinating development within a limited hackathon timeframe required careful task division and rapid testing to ensure all components—smart contracts, backend logic, and frontend UI—worked seamlessly together.
