Seamlessly earn and trade carbon credits, stablecoins, provide liquidity, and offset carbon on the Base Blockchain. Empowering Africa's sustainable future with verifiable carbon offsets.

Why are you participating for Based Africa?

Our motivation is deeply rooted in addressing the unique challenges faced by Africans in the global value chain and the severe impact of climate change on the continent. Africa often finds itself at the suffering end of the value chain for most products, receiving minimal economic benefits while bearing significant environmental and social costs. This imbalance exacerbates poverty and hinders sustainable development.

Climate change has hit Africa hard, with rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and increased frequency of extreme weather events. These changes threaten agriculture, water resources, and overall livelihoods. Ironically, many Africans are compelled to engage in environmentally destructive activities to survive, further exacerbating the climate crisis.

CarbonCorp aims to turn this tide by incentivizing sustainable practices through carbon credits. By providing a platform where carbon credits can be easily traded and offset, we empower African projects and companies to adopt sustainable methods. This not only helps reduce their carbon footprint but also opens new revenue streams. Verified carbon credits represent real environmental action, offering financial rewards for those who contribute to carbon reduction. Rewarding sustainable efforts creates a powerful motivation for more individuals and organizations to engage in environmental conservation. This dual benefit helps create a virtuous cycle where financial gains and environmental health reinforce each other.

In the long run, this approach benefits Africans both financially and ecologically. A healthier environment leads to more stable and productive ecosystems, supporting agriculture and other livelihoods. Financially, the sale of carbon credits provides additional income, improving living standards and economic resilience.

CarbonCorp is committed to leveraging blockchain technology to create a transparent, efficient, tracking and rewarding system for carbon trading for the African continent.

What challenges are you focusing on?

  1. Lack of Verifiable Data: Limited access to reliable environmental data in Africa makes it difficult to accurately measure and verify carbon offset projects.
  2. Double Counting: Carbon credits are often double counted, undermining the integrity of the carbon offset market.
  3. Limited Access to Markets: Smaller players such as marginalized communities struggle to access global carbon markets due to high entry barriers and lack of transparency in the carbon trading process.
  4. Lack of Trust and Accountability in carbon offset systems: Existing systems lack transparency and accountability, eroding trust in carbon offsets.
  5. Poverty and Economic Disparity: Many African communities live in poverty, with limited economic opportunities. CarbonCorp on Base Blockchain creates new revenue streams by enabling individuals and small businesses to earn from sustainable practices.
  6. Environmental Degradation: To make a living, many Africans are forced to engage in environmentally harmful practices such as deforestation and overfishing.
  7. Lack of Financial Inclusion: Traditional financial systems often exclude marginalized communities, making it difficult for them to access capital and financial services.
  8. Community Empowerment: Many communities lack the resources and support to implement environmentally sustainable projects.

How does your submission address this challenge?

CarbonCorp is a protocol on the Base Blockchain, designed to facilitate the tracking, verification and trading of Carbon Credit (CC) tokens against stablecoins like USDC. It addresses several critical challenges faced by African communities as below:

  1. CarbonCorp utilizes an oracle to ensure all carbon credits are tied to verified data. This verification process guarantees that each carbon credit represents a genuine carbon offset, enhancing the reliability and integrity of the market.
  2. By leveraging the Base Blockchain, CarbonCorp prevents double counting. Every transaction is transparently recorded, ensuring each carbon credit is minted from a unique data point and can only be claimed once, thus maintaining market integrity.
  3. CarbonCorp democratizes market access by providing a decentralized platform, enabling smaller projects and companies to participate in the carbon market without intermediaries, thereby opening up global markets to African participants.
  4. Leveraging Base ensures that every transaction on CarbonCorp is fully auditable.
  5. CarbonCorp creates new revenue streams by enabling individuals and businesses to earn from sustainable practices like reforestation and renewable energy projects, helping to alleviate poverty.
  6. CarbonCorp DEX incentivizes sustainable practices through financial rewards for verified carbon offsets. This encourages communities to adopt environmentally friendly methods, reducing degradation and promoting conservation.
  7. The decentralized nature of CarbonCorp ensures that anyone with an internet connection can participate in carbon trading, enhancing financial inclusion and empowering underserved populations.
  8. CarbonCorp provides a platform for community-driven projects, enabling local initiatives to gain financial support through carbon credits. This empowers communities to take charge of their environmental and economic future.

Challenges we ran into

One of the initial challenges we faced was engaging with sustainable businesses and obtaining their feedback. These businesses are often dispersed and have varying levels of awareness about blockchain technology. We tackled this by attending events where sustainable businesses gathered, pitching our solution directly to attendees. This helped in establishing trust and demonstrating the potential impact of our project on their operations and the broader environment.

Developing an automated market maker (AMM) protocol that provides a resilient price curve regardless of the volume traded was another significant challenge. Ensuring that the price curve remains stable even with significant trading volumes required careful design considerations. We achieved resilience in the price curve by implementing a higher tolerance for the swap ratio. This means that the price impact of trades is more evenly distributed, preventing drastic price fluctuations. However, maintaining this stability necessitates high liquidity in the pool. To address this, we incentivize liquidity providers with attractive rewards in terms of interest gained from their liquidity tokens.

Additional Features

While development of the carboncorp front end had started prior to the hackathon, functionality of the site was non-existent, as it was all static. The smart contracts and the AMM algorithm were also flawed and had to be reworked from scratch. Thus most of the current features and robust functionality were developed during the hackathon. These are the new smart contracts for the tokens used, which are the certificate token, liquidity provider (LP) token, carbon credit (CC)token, and test token representative of an ERC 20 stablecoin; the dex pool smart contract which facilitates addition and removal of liquidity from the pool, swapping of the dex pool tokens, offsetting carbon, and issuance of the liquidity pool tokens; integration of wallets with the front end, and integration of the front end with the protocol's underlying smart contracts.
