Earn Through Real-World Asset Tokenization Of Carbon Credits to Offset Carbon Emissions On Carbon Wise

Why are you participating for Based Africa?

As a team of African developers and builders who have lived our entire lives in Africa, our participation in Based Africa is deeply personal. We intimately understand our region's challenges with waste management and carbon emissions, which drives us to create solutions tailored to Africa's unique needs.
Through Carbon Wise, we're transforming environmental challenges into economic opportunities for our communities. Our solution creates sustainable income sources whilst incentivising good environmental behaviour and community clean-up efforts. We recognise the potential of blockchain technology to bring meaningful change, and we're using our technical expertise to build tools that drive mass adoption whilst addressing real-world problems.
Based Africa provides us with the perfect platform to merge our technical knowledge with our passion for community development. We're not simply building a project—we're creating a sustainable system that empowers communities, promotes environmental responsibility, and builds lasting wealth in the region we call home.

What challenges are you focusing on?

Africa faces uniquely pressing environmental challenges that demand innovative solutions. As the world's youngest continent, we are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts due to limited infrastructure and varying levels of environmental awareness. This vulnerability creates an urgent need for scalable solutions that can help our communities adapt and thrive.
Through Base's blockchain infrastructure, Carbon Wise is addressing three critical challenges:
1. Plastic Waste Management: Africa is facing a growing crisis with plastic pollution, contributing to environmental degradation and public health risks. We’re focusing on tackling this challenge by incentivising the collection and recycling of plastic waste through Carbon Wise, turning it into an asset that benefits communities.
2. Carbon Emissions Reduction: As countries and organisations strive to meet global sustainability targets, reducing carbon emissions remains a critical issue. By tokenising recycled plastics into carbon credits, we provide a verifiable and transparent way for individuals, organisations and governments to offset their carbon footprints.
3. Lack of Blockchain Adoption for Real-World Solutions: Despite the growth of blockchain technology, its practical application in solving everyday problems remains underutilised in Africa. We aim to bridge this gap by using Base’s infrastructure to onboard communities onchain, promoting the use of blockchain in waste management and sustainability efforts, and creating economic and environmental value in the process.

How does your submission address this challenge?

Our submission, Carbon Wise, leverages blockchain technology to transform plastic waste management and carbon credit trading in Africa. Our platform creates a circular economy where waste becomes a valuable asset, addressing both environmental and economic challenges.
How It Works:
The platform enables users to deposit plastic waste at designated collection points, receiving Deposit Experience Points as rewards, these points can be accumulated and exchanged for cash or traded for available goods in the general marketplace. These collected plastics are processed at recycling facilities and converted into verifiable carbon credits, which are then tokenised on the blockchain, as verifiable Real-World Asset (RWA). These tokenised credits are then traded onchain in a secondary carbon credits marketplace where they can be purchased by individuals, companies, and governments seeking to offset their emissions.
Impact:
Our solution delivers three key benefits: First, it creates meaningful environmental impact by incentivising large-scale recycling, directly reducing plastic pollution and lowering carbon emissions. Secondly, it drives economic empowerment by providing sustainable income opportunities for local communities through recycling rewards. Finally, it promotes blockchain adoption by introducing users to digital assets through practical, real-world applications.
Through Carbon Wise, we're building a sustainable ecosystem where environmental responsibility becomes economically rewarding, whilst ensuring transparent and verifiable tracking of recycling efforts and carbon credit generation.

Challenges we ran into

In developing Carbon Wise, we encountered three significant challenges that we had to tackle:
1. Blockchain Integration: The primary technical hurdle was integrating our platform with Base and its associated tools, particularly the Onchain kit and Smart Wallet. We overcame this through careful study of Base's developer documentation and by optimising the Smart Wallet Kit to create a seamless onboarding experience for users new to blockchain technology.
2. User Experience Design: Creating an intuitive interface that serves users with varying levels of technical literacy proved challenging. We focused on streamlining the plastic deposit process and simplifying the entire platform’s user interface with simple and visually attractive dashboards. We sought to prioritise accessibility without compromising functionality, ensuring that both individual users and organisations can easily navigate the platform.
3. Real-Time Data Validation: Perhaps our most significant ongoing challenge is ensuring accurate, real-time validation of recycled plastics and carbon credit generation. Whilst we've made progress, we've identified The Graph as a potential solution for enhancing our validation system. This remains a key focus for our next development phase, particularly when we consider the definite need of building a platform that is scalable for use across different communities in Africa.
While these challenges ultimately challenged us in building, we are grateful to have faced them. They have ultimately strengthened our platform's architecture and improved our understanding of user needs, helping us build a platform that we believe will be a more robust and accessible solution for our communities.

Additional Features

During the Base Africa Buildathon, we seized the opportunity to enhance Carbon-Wise by integrating several new features that leverage the capabilities of the Base blockchain. These additions significantly improved our platform's functionality, user experience, and overall impact.
1. Base Smart Wallet and Onchain Kit Integration: We integrated the Base Smart Wallet and Onchain Kit to streamline the user experience, enabling seamless interaction with the blockchain. This allows recyclers and other platform users to easily manage their rewards and carbon credits, lowering the technical barrier for onchain participation.
2. Improved UI: We redesigned and revamped the Carbon Wise UI for better user experience, making it simpler for users to track and manage their platform engagements, making it more intuitive and user-friendly.
3. Enhanced Dashboards: We enhanced and developed more personalised dashboards for different types of users on the platform (recyclers, businesses, administrators). Each dashboard provides tailored insights into their activities and contributions. The customised dashboards enhance user experience by providing relevant information at a glance.
4. Stripped Down Registration for Users and Companies: We streamlined the registration process for both individual users and companies, simplifying onboarding onto the platform and Base. This makes it easier for users to get started with recycling, while also facilitating companies to participate in offsetting their carbon footprints.
These additional features significantly enhance Carbon-Wise's functionality and user engagement while leveraging the strengths of the Base blockchain.
