Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges was making the voice assistant accurate. Many times, the AI misheard what the user actually said, so live transcription didn’t always match the intended words. To solve this, I experimented with better speech-to-text models and auto language detection, but fine-tuning it for real conversations was tricky.
Another challenge was designing empathetic AI responses. I didn’t just want Calmind to reply with short answers — it needed to acknowledge emotions, reflect on them, and then gently suggest helpful actions. Training the AI to always respond in a natural, multi-paragraph, human-like way took a lot of prompt engineering and testing.
On the UI/UX side, balancing simplicity and depth was tough. Calmind has journaling, vision board, mood tracking, and mindfulness features, but I had to make sure the design stayed calming, not cluttered. Choosing soft colors, rounded cards, and smooth layouts helped, but getting it just right was a challenge.
Managing user data securely was another hurdle. With Supabase integration, each journal entry, mood update, or vision board tile needed to be stored per user ID. Making sure this worked smoothly while protecting privacy required careful handling.
I also struggled with turning raw mood data into meaningful insights. The goal was to give users emotional graphs and analytics without overwhelming them or making the app feel too clinical. Finding the right balance between useful and simple was not easy.
Finally, scalability and cost were major concerns. GPT-4o gave incredible results, but it was expensive to run at scale. I had to explore cheaper alternatives while keeping the quality of empathetic responses high. Along with this, ensuring privacy and safety of users — since the app deals with deeply personal emotions — was something I had to prioritize at every step.
