Gamifying a healthier future for our cities
The problem BreatheSmart solves
The problem BreatheSmart aims to solve is the invisibility and unpredictability of air pollution in cities. Existing air quality index (AQI) applications only provide average data, which lacks the personalized and hyperlocal insights people need. This leaves citizens with no motivation to report pollution sources, and governments without timely, specific data for taking action.
BreatheSmart offers a solution by connecting citizens, AI, and government authorities to promote awareness, participation, and proactive health measures.
How People Can Use It
For Citizens:
Report Pollution : Users can upload photos of pollution sources like vehicle smoke, garbage burning, or dust to the Citizen Portal.
Earn Rewards: By submitting verified uploads, citizens can earn "Green Credits" that can be redeemed for rewards. This gamification, which includes a leaderboard, motivates participation.
Stay Informed: Users can view hyperlocal AQI forecasts for their specific street or area.
Receive Health Alerts: The system provides personalized health alerts based on a user's location and the current AQI.
Government Portal Features
Real-time Data and Interventions: The government dashboard displays a real-time AQI map and a heatmap of pollution sources. This allows officials to see reported pollution hotspots and dispatch teams for targeted interventions. For example, they could send a sanitation crew to a reported garbage burning site or alert traffic police about excessive vehicle smoke.
Citizen Feedback Loop: To encourage continued participation, the government can use the dashboard to validate citizen reports and send a notification to the user confirming that action is being taken. Officials can then upload a "proof of action" photo, which would be visible on the citizen's portal, to show that their report led to a tangible result. This transparency helps build trust and motivates the community.
Data-Driven Decisions: By analyzing the data from citizen reports, the government can develop long-term strategies to prevent future pollution. This could include targeted awareness campaigns or infrastructure improvements in areas frequently identified as high-risk.
Rewarding Participation: The government can track citizen engagement and the leaderboard to identify top contributors. This allows them to
allot rewards to these participants, further reinforcing the gamification and incentivizing public participation.
Challenges we ran into
-
Imageverification was the major hurdle due to lack of proper dataset- we overcame this with directly using CLIP model and opencv to verify
-
integrating DB problems- used json and SQLAlchemy
-
integrating heatmaps - took gps locations from users and connected to IQAPI to get the user locationspecific aqi data and created heatmap
-
gamification was also a major problem we used leaderboard and robust logic to solve the problem
-
connecting frontend and backend - we used flask cors to solve this
