BreakTheSilence - Speak Up. Be Heard.

Break The Silence is an online platform where abuse-survivors can raise their voices, seek justice, break this cycle of silence and find support in the process.

The problem BreakTheSilence - Speak Up. Be Heard. solves

Abuse has no limits. Its victims face a lot of barriers just to speak up, including the hesitation to physically file a complaint, fear and even lack of accessibility due to various reasons. What if the abuser was a person with authority? What if that person was the sole income of the family? What if reporting the person means jeopardizing your own life? What if the victim is afraid or just plainly embarrassed to physically go to the police station and file a report, which he/she already knows is going to be public knowledge even before any action is taken about it. The truth is, there are so many ‘what ifs’ which has not been addressed yet. And even if I never understand what it is to actually be that person, I deeply, from my heart, empathize with the victims. I’m unable to just ignore all this and move on with my life. This has to change. Every single ‘what if?’ has to be brought to light. Our motive is to make this process so simple that every abuser would be scared out their wits to even try victimizing someone.
Our project here helps the victim to directly report the abuser, without them knowing the fact until the action is taken. Since it does not require any physical presence or face-face interrogation, it would be more user friendly. Moreover, children of the corona era are so used to the online world, that opening up about their abuse to their computer screen wouldn’t be as far from their comfort zone as is the current, tedious process.

Challenges we ran into

The making of this project has threw us an interesting track of challenges which made ‘thinking out of the box’ a mandatory thing. The lack of proper tutorials and understandable documentations for learning Motoko was a major issue to start with. For a while, we didn’t know what we were doing and learnt a lot of things through just trial and error. We also spent a lot of time and faced a lot of problems in setting up a React.js environment using Motoko backend. It had us freaked out a little as we had already finished the whole of front end works in React.js. It required our collective effort as a team and taught us teamwork and sportsmanship. Finding solutions to each of the problems that kept arriving like a never ending tide, gave us a great experience in how to face obstacles in any phase of life. It taught us that, if you sit in a problem long enough, the solution will find you. Atleast in coding language. It’s because there were instances where we just stumbled across the solution just a moment before giving up. Moreover, we had to travel from a different state to participate in this offline hackathon. The journey was exhausting but it taught us to keep up our energy in times of need. Overall, this hackathon has been a good learning experience, as well as a great opportunity to showcase our skills!
