The problem BrainBase solves
BrainBase
Decentralized Q&A Platform Powered by BRAIN Token on Base
Executive Summary
BrainBase is a decentralized Q&A platform built on Base L2 that transforms knowledge sharing from unpaid labor into a sustainable economic model. By leveraging BRAIN tokens (ERC-20 on Base Network) and smart contract escrow, we enable experts to earn fair compensation for quality answers while providing askers with fast, reliable solutions. Unlike traditional platforms that extract 20-40% fees and operate on opaque algorithms, BrainBase ensures 98-100% of bounties reach experts through trustless, transparent blockchain transactions with ultra-low fees (~$0.01 per transaction).
Our key innovation lies in monetizing the $50B expert knowledge market with near-zero-fee, trustless payments via Base L2 blockchain using BRAIN token and mIDRX stablecoin support for Indonesian users.
The Problem
The current landscape of knowledge sharing and expert consultation is fundamentally broken. On platforms like Stack Overflow, 58 million answers were provided in 2023, representing approximately $2.1 billion in value, yet contributors earned nothing. Approximately 40% of complex questions receive zero answers because there is no economic incentive for experts to invest their time. Collectively, experts donate an estimated $12 billion annually in knowledge while platforms profit $3.8 billion.
Platform exploitation compounds this problem. Services like Upwork and Fiverr extract 20-40% in fees, meaning a $100 job results in only $60-77 reaching the expert. Additionally, 2.3 billion unbanked adults worldwide are excluded from these platforms entirely due to traditional payment infrastructure requirements. Payment delays of 14-30 days further discourage participation.
Response times on existing platforms create real economic damage. Stack Overflow averages 48-72 hours for answers, while Upwork projects take 3-5 days just to begin. With production bugs costing businesses $5,600 per minute, these delays are unacceptable. The trust issues on centralized platforms, with 8.2% dispute rates and freelancers winning only 43% of disputes, result in $1.3 billion in annual fraud losses.
Our Solution
BrainBase solves these problems through a token-powered bounty system built on Base L2. Users lock 1-10,000+ BRAIN tokens in a smart contract when posting questions. These funds are guaranteed until the question asker selects a winning answer, with 100% transparency on the blockchain. The competitive marketplace allows multiple experts to answer the same question, supporting rich content including code snippets, images, and detailed explanations with real-time WebSocket updates.
Our smart contract escrow system ensures trustless automatic payouts in BRAIN tokens with zero platform custody and zero payment disputes. The system is designed for speed, targeting response times under 1 hour compared to 48-72 hours on traditional platforms.
For accessibility, BrainBase includes a free BRAIN faucet that provides new users with 10 BRAIN tokens for free through a one-time claim per account, significantly lowering the entry barrier for new participants.
Token Economics
BrainBase operates on a dual-token model designed for the Base ecosystem. BRAIN Token serves as the native utility token for the platform, used for all bounty payments and redeemable through our integrated swap system. mIDRX (Mock IDRX) provides stablecoin functionality, particularly valuable for Indonesian users, and is fully swappable with BRAIN at a rate of 5,000 mIDRX to 1 BRAIN.
The BRAIN token enables micro-transaction economics that traditional payment systems cannot support. Where credit card fees of $0.45 on a $5 transaction represent 9%, BRAIN transactions on Base cost approximately $0.01, representing only 0.2%. This unlocks millions of small-value questions that would be economically unviable on traditional platforms. The global inclusion aspect means the platform works in all 195 countries without requiring bank accounts, with instant settlement available to the 2.3 billion unbanked adults worldwide.
Tech Stack
The frontend is built with Next.js 15 using the App Router, TailwindCSS for styling, and OnchainKit for seamless wallet integration supporting both Coinbase Smart Wallet and MetaMask. The application uses Wagmi and Viem for blockchain interactions with full Base Sepolia testnet support.
The backend runs on NestJS with PostgreSQL database managed through Prisma ORM. Real-time updates are handled via WebSocket connections, and the authentication flow uses Google OAuth for seamless onboarding.
Smart contracts are developed in Solidity and deployed on Base Sepolia. The contract architecture includes BrainToken.sol (ERC-20 BRAIN token with 1 billion supply), MockIDRX.sol (stablecoin with faucet functionality), BrainSwap.sol (AMM-style swap between mIDRX and BRAIN with configurable rates), and QnAWithBounty.sol (Q&A bounty escrow
Challenges we ran into
Challenges We Ran Into
Smart Contract Deployment and Configuration on Base Sepolia
Deploying multiple interconnected smart contracts (BrainToken, MockIDRX, BrainSwap, and QnAWithBounty) on Base Sepolia required careful sequencing. The BrainSwap contract needed the addresses of both BrainToken and MockIDRX during construction, meaning we had to deploy them in the correct order. After deployment, we needed to transfer initial liquidity (100M BRAIN and 100M mIDRX) to the swap contract and verify that all contract addresses were correctly configured in both the backend and frontend environment files.
Backend ABI Synchronization with Smart Contracts
During development, we updated the BrainSwap contract to add new features like mutable IDRX token addresses and different swap rate naming conventions. This caused a 500 error on the /faucet-swap/info endpoint because the backend ABI did not match the deployed contract. The service was calling functions like swapRate() that had been renamed to ethToBrainRate(). We resolved this by carefully regenerating the ABI from the compiled contract and updating all service method calls to use the correct function signatures.
OnchainKit Wallet Aggregator Configuration
When implementing wallet connectivity with OnchainKit, the initial setup only connected directly to Coinbase Smart Wallet without showing a wallet selection modal. Users could not choose between Coinbase Wallet and MetaMask. We solved this by configuring the OnchainKitProvider with wallet: { display: 'modal' } to enable the wallet aggregator. Additionally, we had to add the MetaMask connector to the wagmi configuration alongside the Coinbase Wallet connector.
Token Swap Rate Precision Across the Stack
Implementing the mIDRX ↔ BRAIN swap feature required synchronizing rate calculations between the smart contract (using 1e18 precision for all values) and the frontend UI (displaying human-readable decimals). The idrxToBrainRate of 0.0002 (meaning 5,000 mIDRX = 1 BRAIN) needed to be consistently represented across the Solidity contract, the NestJS backend API responses, and the React frontend calculations to ensure users saw accurate conversion estimates before executing swaps.
