The problem Beyond Checkmate solves

Beyond Checkmate addresses several significant challenges in both the chess ecosystem and blockchain applications:

  1. Monetization Gap for Skilled Players: Traditional chess platforms offer limited revenue opportunities for skilled players beyond tournaments and coaching. Beyond Checkmate creates a direct correlation between playing skill and earning potential.
  2. Value Attribution in Strategic Games: The platform solves the challenge of quantifying and rewarding strategic excellence through its sophisticated mathematical model that assigns value to quality moves.
  3. Engagement and Retention: By adding financial incentives tied directly to gameplay quality, it addresses the problem of player retention that many chess platforms face.
  4. Transparent Skill Verification: The zero-knowledge proof system solves the critical problem of skill verification without compromising player privacy or enabling cheating.
  5. Illiquidity of Gaming Assets: Unlike traditional gaming where skills have no transferable value, Beyond Checkmate creates liquid assets from chess expertise through its SFT framework.
  6. Meaningful Implementation of Blockchain in Gaming: Many blockchain gaming applications lack substantive utility. This project demonstrates a mathematically sound application of blockchain technology that enhances rather than merely tokenizes the gaming experience.
  7. Meritocratic Reward Distribution: The platform addresses inequities in traditional gaming reward structures by ensuring that rewards are distributed based on demonstrable skill rather than factors like popularity or marketing.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating the Aptos wallet functionality presented significant hurdles that tested our technical resilience. Implementing Petra wallet connectivity proved quite challenging due to npm packages version compatibility issues that required extensive troubleshooting. The development of Move contracts proved exceptionally challenging, as we navigated the unique resource-oriented programming paradigm of Move while implementing complex game theory algorithms for our dynamic valuation model. Deploying these contracts to the Aptos testnet revealed subtle compatibility issues that required multiple iterations to resolve. Perhaps the most demanding aspect was establishing reliable communication channels between our Nextjs frontend and the deployed contracts, particularly for the critical minting operations and the post-game value adjustment functions. We had to develop a robust error-handling system to manage transaction failures and state inconsistencies that could occur during blockchain interactions. The process of updating piece weights after each game required careful transaction sequencing to ensure that the blockchain state accurately reflected gameplay outcomes without introducing race conditions or data corruption. Despite these technical obstacles, we persevered through extensive testing and refinement to create a functional and responsive system that successfully bridges traditional chess mechanics with blockchain technology
