BaseWatch

Empowering citizens to combat illegal activities through blockchain-based reporting and tracking.

Why are you participating for Based Africa?

We are participating in Based Africa because we are deeply committed to addressing critical environmental and social issues in Ghana. As residents and technologists in the region, we've witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of illegal mining (galamsey) and deforestation on our communities and ecosystems. We believe that by leveraging blockchain technology, specifically the Base platform, we can create a transparent, decentralized system that empowers citizens and authorities to work together in combating these issues. Our motivation stems from a desire to protect our natural resources, promote sustainable development, and foster a culture of active citizenship in Ghana and potentially across Africa.

What challenges are you focusing on?

BaseWatch focuses on addressing the challenge of illegal activities in Ghana, particularly environmental crimes such as illegal mining (galamsey) and deforestation. These activities pose significant threats to our ecosystems, water resources, and communities. The current reporting systems are inefficient, lack transparency, and often fail to result in timely action. Citizens feel discouraged from reporting due to fear of retaliation and a perceived lack of impact. Additionally, authorities struggle with obtaining accurate, real-time data to effectively allocate resources and respond to these illegal activities. By utilizing Base blockchain technology, we aim to create a secure, transparent, and efficient system for reporting and tracking these environmental crimes.

How does your submission address this challenge?

BaseWatch addresses these challenges by providing a decentralized platform built on the Base blockchain where citizens can anonymously report illegal activities. Key features include:

Secure, wallet-based authentication for user protection
Immutable storage of reports on the blockchain, ensuring transparency and preventing tampering
Community-driven verification process to validate reports
Interactive map with color-coded zones to visualize hotspots of illegal activities
Token-based incentive system to encourage accurate reporting and verification

This solution empowers citizens to actively participate in governance and environmental protection while providing authorities with verified, real-time data to act upon. The blockchain's immutability ensures that reports cannot be ignored or altered, fostering trust between citizens and authorities. By making the reporting process more accessible and transparent, we aim to increase the rate of successful interventions against illegal activities, ultimately contributing to the protection of Ghana's natural resources and communities.

Challenges we ran into

Blockchain integration: Implementing a seamless integration between the Base blockchain and our frontend was initially complex. We overcame this by thoroughly studying the Base documentation and leveraging community resources.
User anonymity vs. accountability: Balancing the need for user protection with ensuring the credibility of reports was challenging. We addressed this by implementing a wallet-based authentication system and a community-driven verification process.
Data storage optimization: Deciding what data to store on-chain versus off-chain required careful consideration to balance costs and efficiency. We resolved this by storing report metadata on-chain and using IPFS for larger files like images and videos.
Map visualization performance: Rendering numerous report markers on the interactive map initially caused performance issues. We optimized this by implementing clustering and lazy loading techniques.
Smart contract security: Ensuring the security of our smart contracts, especially for the token reward system, was crucial. We conducted multiple internal audits and utilized tools like Slither for vulnerability detection.
Cross-platform compatibility: Ensuring the platform works seamlessly across various devices and browsers presented some challenges, which we addressed through extensive testing and responsive design implementation.

Additional Features

Legal Activity Registration: We implemented a smart contract feature allowing authorized entities to register legal activities, helping to prevent false reporting and provide clarity on permitted operations.
Analytics Dashboard: We developed a comprehensive analytics section that provides visualizations of reporting trends, hotspot analysis, and success stories of resolved cases.
Token Incentivization: We created and implemented a custom ERC-20 token on the Base blockchain to reward users for accurate reporting and validation.
Enhanced Verification System: We improved the community-driven verification process by implementing a staking mechanism for validators, increasing the reliability of verified reports.
Mobile Responsiveness: We optimized the frontend for mobile devices, making it easier for users to submit reports from any location.
IPFS Integration: We integrated IPFS for decentralized storage of image and video evidence, enhancing the platform's overall decentralization.
