A decentralized, censorship-resistant, and secure messaging platform built on Base for private peer-to-peer communication.
Why are you participating for Based LatAm?
As a firm believer in decentralized technologies, I am motivated to build tools that empower individuals to control their own data, ensuring privacy and freedom of communication. The Base blockchain offers a scalable, low-cost platform to achieve this vision, making it ideal for decentralized applications like BaseChain Messenger. This project aligns with my goal of contributing to a more open, secure, and private internet.
What challenges are you focusing on?
In today's world, centralized messaging platforms compromise user privacy by collecting vast amounts of personal data, often without clear user consent. They also possess the power to censor content, limiting freedom of expression. The challenge I’m addressing is to build a secure, decentralized messaging platform where users control their data and communication, preventing any external party from accessing or censoring messages.
How does your submission address this challenge?
BaseChain Messenger addresses the privacy and censorship challenges by decentralizing the messaging process. The app allows users to communicate directly without intermediaries. Messages are encrypted and stored off-chain on IPFS, while metadata is secured on the Base blockchain. By combining these technologies, we ensure user privacy, prevent data misuse, and protect against censorship. This project has the potential to impact communities where freedom of communication is at risk, and it can serve as a model for future decentralized communication platforms.
Challenges I ran into
Integrating IPFS storage: One of the technical challenges was securely storing the message content off-chain while maintaining privacy. IPFS proved to be a great solution, but setting up the encryption and ensuring efficient retrieval was complex. I overcame this by implementing client-side encryption and mapping IPFS hashes to the metadata stored on the blockchain.
User-friendly interface: Building a decentralized app with a smooth user experience while interacting with smart contracts was a challenge. I addressed this by using ethers.js and React to create a seamless connection between the blockchain and the user interface.
Gas fees optimization: Keeping the contract simple and efficient to minimize gas costs required multiple contract iterations and testing on Base’s testnet.
Cheer Project
Cheering for a project means supporting a project you like with as little as 0.0025 ETH. Right now, you can Cheer using ETH on Arbitrum, Optimism and Base.
