Basefit

A decentralised fitness rewards platform bringing together individual fitness tracking, community challenges, and charity-based fitness events

Why are you participating for Based Africa?

I chose to participate in Based Africa because I believe in the power of technology to drive real change across the continent. Africa is on the cusp of a digital revolution. Base provides the perfect infrastructure to build decentralized solutions that uplift communities, empower local innovators, and solve real-world problems.

By leveraging Base's blockchain technology, I want to create scalable, impactful applications that directly address challenges in regions like Kenya, Nigeria, and beyond. Whether through financial inclusion, education, or fitness-based incentives, my goal is to build tools that foster innovation and make a lasting difference in people's lives.

Participating in Based Africa is an opportunity to contribute to this movement, collaborate with like-minded individuals, and help lay the foundation for a more inclusive, decentralized future for Africa and its people.

And of course, I am a Nigerian and an African.

What challenges are you focusing on?

  1. Lack of fitness motivation

  2. Community fitness challenges often lack transparency

  3. Charity fitness events face trust issues with donations

  4. Limited access to fitness rewards is common in underserved areas.

  5. Data ownership is a concern.

  6. People struggle to contribute effectively to health and fitness-related events because they don't have a way to do so.

How does your submission address this challenge?

  1. Basefit tackles low fitness motivation by offering rewards for carrying out fitness related activities.

  2. It solves transparency issues in fitness challenges through onchain tracking.

  3. Basefit ensures donations in charity events go directly to the right causes.

  4. It addresses limited access to fitness rewards - with Basefit rewarding people for engaging in fitness or health related activities can now be Decentralized. Projects, individuals, anyone can open up the reality of rewards even to people in underserved areas.

  5. Basefit gives users control over their fitness data, ensuring privacy and security.

Challenges we ran into

While building, we faced a challenge accessing the Coinbase Wallet and OnChainKit docs due to the restrictions in Nigeria. These tools were essential for our project, but the developers couldn't connect directly.

To fix this, we downloaded a VPN, set it to a region without restrictions, and gained immediate access. This simple solution allowed us to continue working on the project smoothly and reinforced the importance of adaptability in overcoming technical barriers.

Also because of the struggle I had as the team lead and project manager in getting the developers that could build this, I had to work with developers that were offchain, helped them get onboarded and we practically had to build our MVP in 1 week.

So the time constraint for the buildathon was an issue, and that's why we couldn't exactly build our MVP to be an app version - but at least we dealt with that by finding a way to build a functional MVP in web version.
