Why are you participating for Based SEA?

One night, while scrolling through X (formerly Twitter), I stumbled upon an advertisement for the Based SEA Buildathon. As I read through the details, the challenge to build "an onchain app that solves a challenge in your community" caught my attention. Initially, I hesitated, questioning whether I should participate given that my strength lies in backend web development, and many talented developers would be joining.

However, an idea struck me – a blockchain-based charitable donation platform. This concept perfectly aligned with the buildathon's criteria, prompting me to take the leap and join. I decided it was time to test my abilities and push my boundaries.

This marks my first hackathon experience, making it both exciting and challenging. I believe this project not only meets the buildathon's requirements but also has the potential to make a real impact in my community. Participating in Based SEA offers me a unique opportunity to apply my backend skills to blockchain technology, learn new things, and potentially create something meaningful.

Moreover, I have a broader vision for this project. I want to increase awareness and understanding of blockchain technology among people in my country. By demonstrating how blockchain can be applied to solve real-world problems, especially in the realm of charitable giving, I hope to showcase its potential. I strongly believe that blockchain-based solutions can address the challenges in charity work more effectively than all other traditional approaches. This project is not just about building an app; it's about educating and inspiring others to see the transformative power of blockchain technology in creating transparent, efficient, and trustworthy systems for social good.

What challenges are you focusing on?

In Southeast Asia, particularly in Vietnam, we face annual natural disasters like floods and storms. Many areas still struggle with poverty and scarcity. While people are generally compassionate and eager to help both materially and emotionally, there's a significant lack of transparency in financial donations.
Key challenges:

  • Lack of Transparency: In the past, when celebrities raised funds for disaster relief, there was often little clarity on how the money was collected and spent, leading to numerous controversies.

  • Trust Issues: The opacity in fund management has eroded public trust in charitable campaigns.

  • Verification Difficulties: Recently, during the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, people started donating through government organization accounts. However, some individuals manipulated transfer images to inflate their donation amounts on social media, seeking undue credit.

  • Accountability: When the receiving organization published bank statements, many false claims were exposed, highlighting the need for a more reliable verification system.

  • Efficient Fund Distribution: Ensuring that donations reach the intended recipients quickly and effectively remains a challenge.

How does your submission address this challenge?

Our project leverages Base's blockchain technology to create a transparent and efficient charitable donation system. At its core, we're building a smart contract-based platform on Base that handles all aspects of fundraising and fund distribution for charitable causes.

Key features and impact:

  • Transparency: All transactions are executed through the smart contract and recorded on the blockchain, providing complete visibility into the flow of funds.

  • Accountability: The immutable nature of blockchain records prevents manipulation of donation amounts or distribution figures.

  • Trust Building: By addressing the transparency issues of traditional fundraising methods, we aim to restore public confidence in charitable giving.

  • Efficiency: Smart contracts automate fund distribution, reducing administrative overhead and ensuring quicker delivery of aid to those in need.

  • Ease of Use: We're integrating Base's smart wallet technology, offering a user-friendly approach that makes the transition to blockchain-based donations smoother for both organizations and individual donors.

  • Identity and Recognition: Incorporation of Base names enhances user recognition and creates a sense of community among donors.

Potential Impact:

  • Increased Donations: With improved trust and transparency, more people may be willing to contribute to charitable causes.

  • Better Resource Allocation: Clear tracking of funds can lead to more effective use of donations.

  • Fraud Reduction: The verifiable nature of transactions will significantly reduce fraudulent activities in charitable giving.

  • Community Engagement: The transparent system could encourage more active participation and follow-up from donors.

  • Scalability: This model could be adopted by various charitable organizations, potentially transforming the landscape of philanthropy in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Challenges I ran into

Challenges Faced:

  1. Project Scope Underestimation
Initially, I thought this would be a small project within my capabilities. However, as I began working, I realized it was much larger than anticipated, requiring significantly more resources to develop into a complete product.
  2. Time Constraints
    • I discovered the Buildathon when it was already a week in progress.
    • Balancing the project with my full-time job was challenging.
  3. Technical Limitations
    • My frontend development skills were not as strong as my backend expertise.
    • I had limited knowledge of blockchain technology and smart contracts.

Overcoming the Challenges:

  1. Determination and Hard Work
Despite the unexpected scope, I persevered through dedicated effort.
  2. Community Support
I received valuable assistance from various online community members, which helped me navigate technical hurdles.
  3. Time Management
I improved my scheduling and prioritization to make the most of my available time.
  4. Learning on the Go
I rapidly acquired new skills in frontend development, blockchain, and smart contract programming as I worked on the project.
  5. MVP Approach
I focused on developing a Minimum Viable Product that could demonstrate the core functionality, even if it wasn't as fully featured as initially envisioned.

Through these strategies, I managed to create a working prototype that showcases the potential of the platform, despite the challenges encountered along the way.
