The problem Run Club Connect NFT solves
There are over 66 run clubs in Austin locally and with social media, run clubs have been exploding as people from all backgrounds get active and go out for the run and stay for the community. Besides Strava and Instagram, it is hard to interact with others in the run clubs and runners are still building their loyalty to which run club they decide to run at. What started as a way for me to personally track my runs by creating NFTs with metadata on my run is growing into a platform to help connect runners.
Our project helps to bring people on-chain with NFTs from their run club as they build their following and group. Our vision is to revolutionize the running experience and allow runners to connect while showcasing their achievements to motivate each other. There are two types of NFTs we will focus on: Run Club membership and achievements. These membership NFTs have many use cases from allowing runners to participate in special events or get perks for their participation in building up the run club as original runners. The achievement NFTs allow a way to track attendance and can serve as a virtual medal for a 5k, a great way to bring some healthy competition to your fastest race! Our vision is to bring runners on-chain and engage with their community, building belonging and real results into their runs!
Looking into the future, we are onboarding many run clubs and creating an experience that makes managing runners and creating NFTs for each run a breeze. Further along, we hope to allow users of the NFT of each run club a portal to connect and share experiences from their runs and workouts to further deepen the connection for the runner to the run club. On the creative side, Clayton is working with Joshua to create original art pieces for the run clubs, a few of which we will release soon, such as the Quadriheart in our logo. Connecting creators and the community encourages runners to collect unique pieces too!
Challenges I ran into
During the development of this platform, I found it hard to build all my ideas from scratch through ideation. I went to start with what I would personally use in an NFT platform. I wanted to track my progress and created NFTs with metadata of my runs and times. This made it fun to test and see what use cases I would work with. Specifically, membership and achievements would both bring the most impact to runners and run club organizers because it allowed people to have tangible digital assets. I went to run clubs to pitch my idea and hear runners' thoughts for validation of my idea.
Runners liked the idea of being able to track their runs and had not even thought about the future of the run clubs until hearing how NFTs could promote loyalty to the community within the run club. However, bringing runners on-chain was a tall challenge as many people unfamiliar with wallets face many hurdles to creating one. I quickly experimented with Coinbase Smart Wallets and they fit perfectly as runners would want to view their NFTs without needing to go through a long wallet creation process and need to remember their keys. I finally found the best route to create NFTs for runners and would have them send their addresses to the run club organizers who can mint and transfer the NFTs.
Additionally, I wanted to keep a simple interface so that the user would only need to enter relevant information for their NFT, through many conversations at run clubs, I finally found what traits and features were important. Being involved directly in the community allowed me to iterate and get feedback to incorporate!
