Secure Web3 Messaging. Trade, Earn, Connect.

The problem BaseChat solves

BaseChat addresses the fragmentation and lack of secure, integrated financial capabilities within existing Web3 communication platforms. It aims to revolutionize how users interact with decentralized finance and each other by combining secure messaging with powerful blockchain and AI features.

Here's how BaseChat solves problems and enhances user experience:

Secure and Private Communication: BaseChat utilizes the XMTP protocol to provide end-to-end encrypted messaging. This ensures that conversations are private and untraceable, offering a significant security and privacy upgrade compared to traditional messaging applications that often lack robust encryption or collect user data.
Seamless DeFi Integration: Users can perform native payments and transactions directly within their chats on the Base mainnet. Features like group payment splitting simplify financial coordination for shared expenses, and cross-chain support allows for unified management of diverse digital assets. This streamlines financial tasks, making them more convenient and efficient.
Intelligent Trading and Portfolio Management: The platform incorporates AI trading agents that offer real-time portfolio tracking, automated price alerts, and AI-powered market analysis and recommendations. This empowers users to make more informed trading decisions, manage risk effectively, and stay updated on market movements without needing to switch between multiple applications.
Collaborative and Social Finance: BaseChat fosters a social environment for financial activities. Basenames integration provides human-readable addresses, simplifying interactions. Community rewards incentivize participation, and social trading features allow users to share strategies and learn from successful traders, transforming individual financial pursuits into a more collaborative and rewarding experience.
Enhanced User Experience and Accessibility: With its "cyberpunk design" and "premium animations," BaseChat aims to provide an intuitive and engaging user interface. This makes complex Web3 interactions more accessible and enjoyable for a broader audience.
Non-Custodial Security: The platform's non-custodial architecture ensures that users maintain full control over their assets, and all integrations are thoroughly tested through smart contract audits, enhancing overall security and trust.

Challenges I ran into

A significant challenge encountered during the development of BaseChat involved the implementation of the custom themes feature, specifically related to its interaction with toast notifications and modal management. Users reported seeing multiple, duplicate toast messages when applying themes, and the theme selection modal sometimes failed to open or close as expected, leading to a confusing and frustrating experience.

The core of the problem stemmed from a few interconnected issues:

Duplicate Toast Notifications: The CustomThemes component was designed to provide feedback using react-hot-toast. However, the toast.success calls within the theme application logic lacked unique identifiers. This meant that every time a theme was applied, or even when the component re-rendered and attempted to load a previously saved theme, a new toast message would be generated, resulting in a cascade of identical pop-ups.
Inconsistent Modal State Management: The visibility of the CustomThemes modal is controlled by the activeFeature state in the global Zustand store, which is updated via the setActiveFeature function. There was an inconsistency in how this state was being set and reset, particularly when the modal was opened or closed. This led to scenarios where the modal might not appear when triggered, or it would persist on screen even after the user attempted to close it.
Race Conditions in Theme Application: The theme application process involved manipulating CSS variables on the document.documentElement and adding classes to document.body. Without proper synchronization or explicit triggers for re-rendering, there could be race conditions where the UI elements didn't immediately reflect the new theme, or transitions appeared abrupt.
To overcome these hurdles, a multi-pronged approach was taken:

Implementing Unique Toast IDs: To prevent duplicate toast messages, the toast.success calls in src/components/CustomThemes.tsx were modified to include a unique id property. By using an ID derived from the theme's unique identifier (e.g., id: \theme-${theme.id}), react-hot-toastcould correctly identify and update an existing toast for that theme, rather than creating a new one. Aduration was also added to ensure toasts automatically disappear after a set time.
Refining Modal State Control: The logic for setting and clearing the activeFeature state was meticulously reviewed. In src/components/Sidebar.tsx, the onClick handler for the "NEW FEATURES" button and the onClose prop passed to CustomThemes were ensured to consistently call setActiveFeature(null) when the modal needed to be dismissed. This established a clear and reliable flow for controlling the modal's visibility.
Ensuring Smooth Theme Transitions: To address the visual inconsistencies during theme application, explicit CSS transitions were introduced. In src/components/CustomThemes.tsx, a theme-transition class was temporarily added and removed from document.body to force a repaint and trigger smooth CSS transitions defined in src/index.css. This ensured that changes to CSS variables were animated, providing a more polished user experience.
By systematically addressing these issues, the theme application process became robust and visually appealing, eliminating the frustrating duplicate pop-ups and ensuring the modal behaved predictably.
