The motivation behind Base Translate is to help bridge the language gap in the blockchain space, especially within Africa. There is a lack of resources and information in native African languages, making it difficult for non-English speakers to fully understand and engage with blockchain technology. As a Zambian and part of the broader African crypto community, I want to ensure that no one is left behind in the digital revolution. By translating Base documentation into local languages, this initiative will empower local communities to adopt and leverage blockchain technology for growth and development.

The main challenge being addressed is the lack of blockchain and crypto-related documentation in African languages. Most blockchain knowledge and resources are primarily available in English, which leaves out a significant portion of the African population who speak local languages like Lozi, Nyanja, Bemba, Tonga, etc. This language barrier makes it difficult for Africans to fully understand and use blockchain technology to build, invest, and innovate. This project aims to solve that gap by providing comprehensive translations of Base documentation, making it easier for people to onboard into the ecosystem.

Base Translate directly tackles the issue of accessibility by translating key Base documents into Zambian languages, and we even had a Nigerian participant also translate in the local language. The project makes blockchain knowledge more inclusive, ensuring that language is not a barrier to learning about Base or participating in its ecosystem. By translating over 100,000 words per language, Base Translate Aims to provide comprehensive resources that empower communities to understand, engage with, and build on Base. This initiative will help onboard new users and developers, ultimately supporting the growth of blockchain adoption in Africa. Apart from this, all translated documentas can be easily downloaded and added to the official Base website to help translate the webiste for the locals, be converted into langauge specific books or manuels and even be used as a reading guide to create audio content in specific languages as needed, thereby also incouraging locals to participate and even create translation jobs for them.

One of the main challenges encountered was with the translation platform, Crowdin, which is an amazing collaboration tool but requires payment after the trial period. This created a financial hurdle for hosting the translations long-term. Another challenge was the sheer volume of content—over 100,000 words per language. Due to time constraints, we focused mainly on Base documentation and left out tutorials for now. Managing such a large project in a short timeframe was also challenging, but with a dedicated team and good planning, we made substantial progress. I also asked for an extension for the trial from the crowdin platform so that the transaltors can continue translating for the buildathon which was granted.
