The problem Base Mail solves

Base Mail ensures that only the verified onchain owner of a Base name can send emails—eliminating spoofing and protecting against phishing and fraud. At the same time, its AI-powered summarization and HTML abstraction services streamline overloaded inboxes into clear, concise formats, making email management both safer and more efficient.

Challenges we ran into

Creating Inboxes from a Base Name

One of our first challenges was enabling users to create an inbox from their .base.eth name. Since .base.eth domains can't be used directly as SMTP inboxes due to TLD restrictions, we created basemail.me as a proxy domain. Each .base.eth identity automatically maps to an @basemail.me address, verified by the owner's signature. This solution leverages AWS SES for robust email delivery and authentication while maintaining a secure and seamless connection to your verified Base name.

How We Overcame It:

1. Domain Verification:
   We acquired the domain basemail.me and verified it in AWS SES. This involved setting up DKIM and SPF records to ensure our emails were authenticated and trusted by recipients.

2. Dynamic Email Address Generation:
   When a user signs up with their Base name, our backend automatically generates an email address like [email protected]. This mapping is handled by our custom logic, which links each Base name to a unique email inbox.

3. Inbound Email Routing:
   We configured AWS SES to catch all emails sent to basemail.me using receipt rules. These rules forward incoming emails to an AWS Lambda function, which processes and stores the emails—ready to be processed by our AI.

4. Integration with Standard Clients:
   By resolving all Base name emails to basemail.me, standard email clients can send BaseMail messages (we call them bmails) without any special configuration, ensuring compatibility and ease of use.

This AWS SES workflow allowed us to overcome the challenge of dynamically creating secure, verified inboxes from Base names, ensuring a seamless and trusted email experience for our users.
