The Baseline
Bringing More Africans Onchain
Why are you participating for Based Africa?
We are participating because we have always been passionate about Web3 and the opportunities it has created. As a team of Nigerians, some pressing challenges we face on and individaul, and corporate level, include lack of efficient cross-border payment solutions, ready access to foreign exchange, and inadequate power supply. We strongly believe that Base has created an amazing platform for using, and making dapps, that can improve everyday life of the average person, as well as businesses, and encourage Web3 growth in Africa. By creating awareness and educating people on solutions that solve local problems in Nigeria, and Africa as a whole, we move multiple steps closer to bringing more people onchain. This is an amazing opportunity to work with a leading industry giant and help impact the future of blockchain technology.
What challenges are you focusing on?
The Baseline tackles the education and awareness gap hindering Web3 adoption among our target audience (individuals, students, entrepreneurs, and early builders).
Beginners face unclear learning paths, complex technologies like smart contracts, and challenges with wallet management, gas fees, and security, limiting user engagement. Many new builders (as witnessed in this Base Africa Buildathon) also struggle with business development, marketing, and community-building, especially in the aspect of finding product-market fit, go-to-market (GTM) strategy, user acquisition and user retention. These usually require prior work experience (within or from outside Web3) and/or are costly to access.
How does your submission address this challenge?
The Baseline team will start with our 85k+ followers, then grow that over 10 year period to 1m actiev community members.
For beginners:
- Structured Learning Pathways: Step-by-step guides on wallets, dApps, and Base’s onchain solutions simplify complex concepts.
- Simplifying Technologies: Breakdown Web3 tools and concepts like lending platforms, payment systems, decentralized social media, RWAs and DePIN for beginners.
- User Onboarding: Personalized support, product tours, and incentives to improve engagement and retention.
- Security and Scalability Awareness: We educate users on Web3 security and Layer 2 solutions, ensuring safe and scalable adoption.
For early-stage builders/founders:
- The Baseline provides essential and relevant education for early-stage technical founders, covering market research, growth strategies, business development, social media, community building, and user retention.
After the basics, we’ll emphasize on Onchain Identity (Base Names), Real World Assets, and Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks.
This will be implemented across 3 phases:
Phase 1 (Year 1-3): Social Media Campaign and Education
Launch campaigns on Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook to explain Web3 basics and Base solutions through posts, videos, memes, and infographics. Use AMAs, Spaces, and onboarding videos to showcase real-world use cases (e.g., cross-border payments) and drive wallet and dApp adoption with help from micro-influencers.
Phase 2 (Year 4-6): Building an Engaged Community
Foster discussions through quizzes, competitions, and referral programs. Encourage user-generated content to build trust, and use gamification (e.g., NFTs, badges) to boost participation and retention.
Phase 3 (Year 7-10): Scaling & Partnerships
Collaborate with local influencers, Web3 platforms, and community groups. Develop educational toolkits on RWAs, DePIN, and Onchain Identity, partnering with institutions, businesses, and NGOs to expand reach and onboard more users.
Challenges we ran into
- We held an AMA about Web3 and Base for a Facebook community with a Telegram channel and AMA was announced on both platforms. We planned to share 100 Base Names as a giveaway for those who indicated interest (by filling a form) in the AMA. The post-AMA follow-up was a post with CTAs for them to claim the Base Names. The response was very slow early. Thankfully, the form they initially filled included contact details. I added them to my Google contacts (downloaded CSV format), then shared the tasks directly via Whatsapp (most), Telegram, and email. This increased the response rate significantly.
