Awareness AI

An app that uses cutting-edge AI to teach children and young adults about important environmental issues in a playful yet compelling manner

The problem Awareness AI solves

The next generation of leaders, educators, and policymakers cannot address critical environmental challenges like climate change unless they are educated on these environmental issues at a young age. Initiatives led by the EPA like the Environmental Education Training Program support teachers who educate children on these issues. However, environmental education cannot merely be taught with textbooks and exams; it must be engaging and interactive for children to become genuinely interested in solving these problems throughout their lives.

Our app, Awareness AI, leverages the latest advances in NLP and Deep Learning to generate instructive content on environmental issues in a playful yet compelling manner for children and young adults. In the app, a child can not only choose which environmental issue to learn about, but creatively decide how it is communicated. For example, he or she can create a poem about water pollution in the style of a pirate. By letting the child be creative and playful with how educational content is generated, Awareness AI instills the importance of environmental issues far better than any textbook or article.

In the long-term, this app can be used in a wide range of educational settings, including classrooms, field trips, and museums to make environmental education fun and memorable for children.

Challenges we ran into

  1. On a technical level, the most challenging aspect of the project was integrating the frontend React Native code with a backend API call to Open AI’s API. To overcome this, we compartmentalized our code, testing the frontend UI and backend API call separately before bringing them together using the React Axios library. During this process, debugging using Google (Stack Overflow) and Chat GPT was crucial to resolve errors.

  2. Another challenge with the project was iterating the frontend design to be seamless and clean, especially since our target users are children and young adults, who have relatively high expectations for app design. We tested our app with several family members and friends for feedback on the design and user flow, and iterated elements accordingly.
