The problem AUXDENT solves
The AI-Integrated Dental Diagnostic & Treatment Planning System revolutionizes the way dental professionals diagnose and treat patients by leveraging the power of artificial intelligence. Traditional methods of diagnosis can sometimes lead to misinterpretation or missed early-stage conditions, but with AI-powered analysis of X-rays, CBCT scans, and intraoral images, dentists can detect cavities, periodontal disease, wisdom tooth impactions, and bone density issues with far greater precision and efficiency.
This system significantly reduces the time dentists spend reviewing records and planning treatments. By utilizing a treatment recommendation engine that follows internationally recognized guidelines such as those from the ADA and FDI, it provides evidence-based suggestions while also offering a risk-benefit analysis for multiple treatment options. Unlike manual decision-making, which can be time-consuming and prone to oversight, the AI system personalizes its recommendations based on a patient’s medical history, habits, and allergies, ensuring safer and more effective treatment plans. What sets this system apart is its ability to continuously learn and improve over time. By incorporating real-time feedback from dentists and tracking treatment outcomes, the AI refines its recommendations and adapts to new clinical research and emerging best practices. This ensures that the system remains at the cutting edge of dental care, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and optimizing treatment success rates.

Challenges we ran into
One major challenge we faced while building the AI-Integrated Dental Diagnostic System was handling large dental image files efficiently. Since high-resolution X-rays and CBCT scans contain crucial diagnostic details, they caused slow upload speeds, long AI processing times, and storage inefficiencies. The backend struggled to process large files quickly, making real-time AI-powered diagnosis impractical.
To solve this, we optimized image compression on both the frontend and backend, using sharp to reduce file size before upload and OpenCV to preprocess images for AI analysis. Instead of storing large files directly in MongoDB, we integrated Cloudinary for cloud storage, ensuring quick retrieval without database overload.
Additionally, we improved the AI processing pipeline by switching from Flask to FastAPI, which handles requests asynchronously, and leveraging GPU acceleration with TensorFlow/PyTorch to speed up image analysis. To prevent the system from slowing down during multiple requests, we implemented Celery with Redis, allowing intensive AI computations to run as background tasks.
On the database side, we stored compressed thumbnails in MongoDB for quick access while keeping full-resolution images in the cloud. We also indexed key fields like patient ID and diagnosis status to optimize query performance.
After these optimizations, we achieved 3x faster image uploads, 50% reduction in AI processing time, and an overall smoother user experience, making real-time dental diagnosis more practical and efficient.
