AlgoGate SDK

Algorand x402 micropayments SDK for APIs

The problem AlgoGate SDK solves

Monetizing an API today requires setting up a payment processor, managing subscriptions, issuing API keys, handling billing failures, and building an entire auth layer around it. This is a lot of infrastructure for a developer who just wants to charge for access to a route.
AlgoGate solves this by making payment the access mechanism itself. A developer adds one decorator to any FastAPI route and that route immediately requires an Algorand micropayment before it responds. No Stripe account, no subscription table, no API key management, no user accounts.
Any client with an Algorand wallet and some ALGO can pay and get access instantly. The payment is verified directly on-chain, so there is no middleman and no way to fake it.
It is useful for developers who want to sell access to data APIs, AI model endpoints, premium content routes, or any service where pay-per-call makes more sense than a monthly subscription. It is also useful for developers who want to reach a global audience without dealing with credit card infrastructure or geographic payment restrictions.
The Chrome extension that AlgoGate scaffolds automatically means the client side is also handled. A user installs the extension, creates a wallet, funds it, and can start paying for API calls immediately without the API developer writing any frontend code.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was getting the middleware and route decorator to share request context cleanly in FastAPI without forcing the developer to add request: Request to every endpoint. We solved this using a Python context variable that the middleware populates before the route runs.
Verifying Algorand transactions without the Python algosdk was tricky at first. We had to read through the Algorand Indexer REST API documentation carefully to understand exactly which fields to check and how the payment transaction object is structured in the JSON response.
The note prefix system took several iterations to get right. We needed a way to tie a payment to a specific route so that a payment for one endpoint could not be replayed against another. We ended up deriving a 16 character hex prefix from the SHA-256 hash of the route path, which the extension embeds in the transaction note.
Scaffolding the Chrome extension from inside Python was harder than expected. We used inspect.stack() to find the caller's directory and embedded all the extension templates as strings inside scaffold.py. Getting the browser algosdk bundle to work without npm install required bundling the minified JS directly into the scaffold output.
The JWT session token scope was also a subtle problem. We needed tokens to be route-scoped so a session bought for one endpoint could not unlock a different one, and we had to make sure the secret was deterministic but not guessable, so we derived it from the receiver address.
