Miami, United States
As a child in rural West Virginia, Lucinda Lewis aka Drivr, harbored twin fascinations – one with automobiles and another with airplanes. At four years old, she “drove” a Volkswagen while sitting in her father’s lap; by third grade, she copiloted the family’s single-engine Cessna from a dirt runway. As much as she loved wheels and wings, though, Lewis possessed a creative spirit that found expression through painting, sewing and learning to use a camera by age ten.
Instead of following in her dad’s footsteps and going to law school, she ran away to become a metal sculptor, then established her first business as an aerial photographer. When her grandmother eventually found her, she loaned Lewis money in exchange for a promise to protect all of her photos by copyrighting them. Lewis agreed. It was a vow that would prove to be prescient decades later.
As Lewis pursues her passion for photography, she creates artwork about cars and their profound and pervasive influence on our culture. She focuses on not only the automobile as an aesthetic object in and of itself but also the historic achievements of factory founders, coachbuilders and engineers as well as the auto-inspired architecture that has flourished roadside.
Today, with the rise of digital ledger technology, Lewis is now engaging with ardent car enthusiasts through an innovative series of unique digital artifacts celebrating the art of the automobile. By combining her own striking visual images with the captivating human stories behind every car, Lewis’s new CarMania collection preserves our shared automotive legacy and will make it widely accessible for generations to come.
The author of several books, including Roadside America and Porsche: The Fine Art of the Sports Car, Lewis continues to delight in tracking down rare automobiles around the globe and adding them to her collection.
