Vishal Saranathan

I am Vishal Saranathan, an undergrad CSE BTech student in NIT Trichy. I am from Chennai and did my 11th and 12th grade in Maharishi Vidya Mandir in Chennai. My hobbies are photography, playing games, numismatics, solving Rubik's cube and watching movies.

I started coding when I was in 12th grade when we had C++ lab in our school. We experimented on various libraries of C++ on the old TurboC++ compiler, and we created Library Systems and Book lending services as small-time projects. At that time, creating graphic visuals on the dated-looking interface made us feel like badass coders among our peer mates. That's when I developed an interest in coding, and especially, wanted to create sleek and beautiful interfaces for the projects that I wanted to create.

I, hence, joined CS in NIT Trichy and started to learn web development. I joined our college's coding club and created websites, both for the admin of our college and some custom projects, that we ideated and created. The projects that I worked on include:

  • Website for Scient Innovation club in NIT. (https://scient.nitt.edu)
  • Orientation website for the freshers of the college (https://orientation.nitt.edu)

I have also worked on self projects in my pastime. I have created:

  • RevStop, a website for travelers, where travelers can review tourist locations, add them to wish list, and get to know about nearby tourist locations.
  • BookKeepers, a website for book lovers, which is like a social media website for readers.
  • A social media app for photographers that I am working on at present, which is similar in some ways to Instagram.
  • A website for my grandfather that I am about to complete
  • A smart tourist mobility map which collected real-time data from IoT devices that included road data, parking data etc and displayed them on the map. It was a problem statement by Visteon and created in a hackathon in the past.

I have experimented on canvas and created flappy birds and a rudimentary version of pocket tanks, the android game.

Naturally, due to the buzz all over my college, I tried Machine learning and Deep learning. I did a few courses online, on the basics, and read a few papers on the CNNs and RNNs. I got too interested in Image processing and focused more on it. I did an intern in Sutherland global services on Image processing and completed it successfully with my manager being very happy. It's during this intern that I realized that there exists a lot of niche problems for which conventional solutions are not effective always. And these problems seem very small at first glance, but when dived deeper realized the complexity of it. I learned that the problem that I was working on in my intern was being worked on and analyzed by many people worldwide.

I love to attend Hackathons, as I feel its the best way to learn new technologies and ideate on innovative products in a short time. I have participated in a few hackathons in the past like Sangam hardware-software hackathon and Pragyan Hackathon, to name a few. Hackathons also help in inculcating interpersonal skills like leadership, public speaking, and teamwork, which are essential for any person in his professional career.

I love coding new software and creating new products that can benefit the common man in his everyday activities. I hope I get more opportunities in the future to pursue my career in the same and make the world a better place.
