Previously, we posted a couple times on a study that described life events that influence student retention. If you thought that information was useful, you may want to geometry homework help read this article from The Chronicle of Higher Ed.* Aside from elaborating on which “noncollege life events” have the strongest impact on retention, it also describes how these events impact students of various ethnic and racial backgrounds in different ways.

A couple key points from the three studies covered:

  • Black and Hispanic students are almost twice as likely to experience a pay for essay correction stressful life event than Asian students (not to mention much more likely to have experienced more than one).

  • Divorce of one’s parents can greatly reduce “college-going expectations.”

  • Transferring from one high school to another appears to cause harm academically and reduces one’s likelihood of obtaining a college degree.

The Big Idea: Colleges concerned about retention should find ways to identify and support students experiencing stressful life events. Right now, it’s too easy for them to pay to have your essay written slip through the cracks. More often than not, students who do experience these kinds of stressors have to self-identify and seek out support themselves, rather than being proactively identified by their institutions.
